Guest guest
Dear All, I have rejoined this group after few months of break. I was going thru the archives and found a question from Smt Mathangi on significance of Seemantham. But i did not find any reply for the same. My daughter's seemantham also falls in few months. I would also like to know the significance of this ritual and explain her. I request the members to share their knowledge. With Respects, Vathsala
Guest guest
Here is a description I found on the net. If I find more info, I pass it on.. Seemantham is performed during the period between the fifth and the eighth months of pregnancy. The specific materials used during this Samskara, that are for the lady only, are, the quill of a porcupine, an ear of ripe paddy and some Udumbara leaves. Manthrams are intended to purify the foetus and to request Brahma, Agni, Raga (Rika), Vishnu, Soman and Ganga to protect it, to make the delivery smooth and to make the son intelligent. The main deity invoked is Raga or Rika, the presiding deity of the full-moon. The implications of the manthrams are: that the pregnancy should be fruitful; the child should be endowed with sharp and penetrating intellect (like the sharp quill of the porcupine). The child should be beautiful like the full-moon. The gist of the main mantra is: "I beseech the goddess Raga(Rika). May she make this ceremony blameless. May my son be endowed with sharp intellect." In some regions music is added. Also sometimes the ladies are asked to sing: "Be a mother of heroic sons" thus creating a heroic atmosphere. The mother fasts and keeps silent after the ceremony till night time when the stars become visible. At the close of the ceremony she touches a male calf, symbolizing a son. At the time of pregnancy this is performed for the health and wealth of baby and also for normal delivery. The unique aspects are parting of the hair, udagasanti, homam, valaigappu, and touching a male calf. The most important part is the udagasAnti. After the sactification of the jalam, the expectant mother is asked to bath in this sanctified water to remove doshAs. Perhaps the details are slightly different in Sri Vaishnava Yajur veda sampradayam, but the significane is essentially the same. Adiyen R.T.V. Guest guest
Pranams to one and all. Adiyen Srivaishnava dasan. Our vedic / smritis prescribe various samskaras for grihasta's. There are three prenatal samskara's namely, garbhadhana, pumsavana and simantonnayana (seemantham). Encl write up explains all the three. I am sending you all three as mostly in present day context, pumsavana and seemantha are done together. I am very happy that someone wants to know the relevance of our practices and understand. Not a single word in this is written by me but taken from different sources. Hope Sri. Sadagopan swamin's efforts will also help us in understanding it better. What I am encl is only an introduction and Elder's pls. pardon me for any Errors and omissions. I have posted the file in our group site. Guest guest
Sri RAmajayam SrimathE GopAla DEsikAya Namaha Swamin, Delightful write-up on the three prenatal Samskara's. AdiyEn have a Samsayam, 1. Why is the male inheritance glorified in these SamskAras. AdiyEn can see a partial reason that a male progeny pursuing Vaidhika Dharma can liberate several generations before and after.... 2. Why are these samskaaras restricted to the first child alone. AdiyEn can once again see a partial reason in the fact first delivery is complicated. But the mantras that benefit the child are still invaluable, isn't it. Would appreciate responses only from Vaidhikas (ie. no speculative threads please). AdiyEn Sri RAmAnuja DAsan, Sudarsana DAsOsmi --- Narasimhan <snarsi wrote: > > Pranams to one and all. Guest guest
Swamin, No gender bias intended. The word used is for gender male and hence i just wrote that way. Vaidhikas can elaborate further. Sorry for any mistakes / errors / omissions. paranams Narasimhan Sudarsan Parthasarathy.S. Guest guest
Dear Swamini: The debate about considering the first ceremony as Ksetra purification or not should have been the root of this discrimination. >From the article posted in the Files section, we see In the Mitaksrara on the Yajnavalkya, we find an eliminating tendency where Vijnanesvara says, "These Pumsavana and Simanta being Ksetra Samskara should be performed only once." The Ksetra concept won over the Garbha and sishu concepts, I presume. Interestingly, the concepts were debated and written as gruhya sutras or rule books that we still follow in our religious ceremonies. Thank you. Dasan R.T.V.
