Guest guest
Dear Poojaji: Recital of Sundara Kandam can confer both material and spiritual benefits to the reciter. A spiritua aspirant can take up this chanting without any sankalpa (wish declaration or declaration of intent) and see the benefits for himself/ herself. As regards the material benefits accruing out of this recital, there are well-documented instances of people getting married by the recital of the full Sundara Kaandam, getting rid of planetary troubles, ghostly afflictions/ black-magic, getting cure from chronic diseases, getting Government favours, etc. The epic Raamaayanaa is verily mantra shastra that can fulfill one's wishes in life. Uma Samhita of Vaayu Purana has given the procedures to chant the Sundara Kandam for material benefit. It clearly gives the chapter to be recited, the offerings to be placed, etc. As the list is rather a litte too lengthy, I am not giving it here. Generally, for reading the full sundara Kandam, the following are some efficacious ways: 1) The whole Sundara Kaandam can be chanted in one day ( It will take more than 8 hours minimum assuming one is very fluent with the recital). 2) It can be chanted in two days in the following manner.....First day: Chapters 1 to 32; SEcond day: The rest of the chapters should be recited. 3) Reading in 3 days: First day: Chapters 1 to 27, SEcond Day: Chapters 28 to 40; Third day: The remaining chapters. 4) For growth in prosperity: The reading should be done in 8 days. The reading should commence on a Friday and should end on the next Friday. The method of chanting in this method is that each day you have to chant 9 Sargas for the first 7 days, and the remaining 5 Sargas should be chanted on the 8th day. On completion of this recital, on the 8th day, the chapter describing the coronation of Shri Raama should be chanted. 5) Reading for attaining liberation: For 6 months, the first sarga (chapter) of the Sundara Kandaa should be read daily whereby the reader can get over all his worldly troubles and attain Supreme Bliss. (Ref. Uma Samhita Verses 183 and 184). In whatever method you choose to recite, at the beginning of the recital special poojas should be offered to Shri Ramachandra Murthi, Sita Devi, and Shri Hanuman. The Sundaram Kaandam book should be also worshipped reverentially giving it the respect due to a Guru. A seat should be placed facing North for Shri Hanuman who is assumed to be present at the place of recital and bless the reciters. At the end of the recital, some mangalaacharanams should be chanted and the recital closed reverentially. Some token amount (based on your capacity) can be donated to the needy persons or for some charitable purpose (What you are offering to the Pandit is your offering for his service charge; So kindly do not assume just because you have paid the Pandit, the charity part is over....You have to donate some token amount to somebody OTHER THAN the Pandit performing the recital on your behalf. It can be a miniumum amount, but give out that offering with all your heart and nobility of purpose. This is what wins Divine Grace). Of course, there are other methods of chanting like reciting in 32 days, reciting the entire Kanda 68 times in 68 days which gives cure from all incurable diseases. But, this way is very eloborate in its rituals also like when the first round of the parayanam is completed 12 religious scholars should be fed and honoured, and with the completion of each round one additional scholar should be honoured (i. e. on completion of the Sundarakandam the 2nd time 13 scholars, etc. and on full completion of the 68 times 80 scholars should be honoured as per Uma Samhita!) So naturally, it entails great input of money, effort and organizational acumen to perform this according to the recommendations in this manner! I can, in my personal experience of chanting this for the benefit of people who approach me for remedies, vouch for the efficacy of this recital. Of course, the extent of results depends greatly upon the sincerity of the aspirant and the sincerity and ethicality of the purpose. When the recital process is on (whether one does the recital oneself or whether one depends on a Pandit to perform this), one should lead a highly ethical life refraining from all sins and doshas, maintain high standards of ritual purity, etc. to reap the FULL BENEFIT of the recital. Jai Shri Raam. Blessed be. Pandit. R.DAKSHINAMOORTHI.
