Guest guest
Dear members, Very few temples are seen pertaining to Vagishwari Devata which is also called Nakuli. Vagishwari is the tantric deity that presides over the Vak and has a vehicle of Mongoose (Nakula) and hence she is called Nakuleshwari. There is an ancient temple dedicated to Nakuleshwari Devata in Kodumoor Village of Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh. This village is situated at the banks of Handri River. It is the svambhu deity that probably dates back to to 14-15 century. The name of this devata is Goddess Vallelamba. The deity holds Trident and Pana Patra in her left hands and Damaruka and Khadga at her right hands. At the left side of hers, there is an idol of Mongoose and at the right side Kamadhenu denoting the Vak. This devata of Vak also presides over the famous rik of rg veda which runs as “Devim vaachamajayantha devah taam vishva rupam……dhenurvaak…â€. The Nakuleshwari presides over one’s speech and is worshipped for extempore speech during the debates, polemics, vak bandhana of opponents. The sloka of Nakuli Devata runs like this: Oshthaa Pidhaanaa Nakuli – dantaih parivrutaa pavih Sarvasmai vaacha ishana – daaru maa miha vadayeth This dhyana sloka presides over the famous Vagiswari mantra (…….vada vada vagvaadini……). The Stotra that is given below is the Nakuleshwari Stavah pertaining to Goddess Vallelaamba. There is a short legend and historical fact behind the composition of this hymn. Brahmasri Gollapinni Mallikarjuna Sastrigal (of whom I mentioned in my earlier mails who is the parama guru of my gurunatha) hails from this Kodumoor village of Kurnool district. This legend is about the Grandfather of Mallikarjuna Sastrigal. His name was Shri Rama Sastrigal. During the childhood he was a dullard and did not have a serious intention of vedic studies. He used to move with street children and used to spend time in playing cards. Everyday he used to get thrashings from his father for being a dullard and not being serious in his life. One fine morning, frustrated by his child’s ways, his father kicked Shri Rama Sastry from the house and asked him not to return home till he completes the study of Veda Sastra and Sanskrit Literature. Not knowing what to do, this young chap Shri Rama Sastry went inside the temple of Goddess Vallelamba, shut himself and closed the doors from inside. For 3 days, this boy was inside the temple without food and water. The local villagers unable to bear the panic broke open the door and found this young chap Shri Rama Sastrigal in Nirvikalpa Samadhi. When woken up by his father, this wonderful hymn on Goddess Vallelamba (who is none other than Goddess Nakuleshwari) gushed forth from his mouth. Even today, one can find the descendants of this wonderful personality who are the official priests of this temple. This hymn is chanted at the time of “Akshara Abhyasam†of the children belonging to the descendants of Shri Rama Sastrigal for excellence in academic studies and razor sharp memory. This is the wonderful hymn chanted in our parampara for Vak siddhi. With regards, Sriram Unlimited freedom, unlimited storage.
