Nishkalangeshwar is one of the wonderful, glorious temples in the world. This temple is situated near Bhava Nagar in the Arabian sea, at Gujarat. The main deity is Lord Shiva.People reach out to the Shiva temple about 1.5 kilometers into the sea. In this historic place, Pandavas, the heroic brothers worshipped the lingas that are symbolic of Lord Shiva after the fierce battle in which they killed their evil cousins as narrated in the epic Mahabharat. The legend says, they established 5 Shiva Lingas at this place and prayed to Lord Shiva to remove all their sins.
Think of a temple in the weirdest of places. Under the sea. But then, the Hindus have built their temples over the hills and mountains, inside the caves, at the sea shore, near the water falls… where ever nature reveals itself in all its grandeur and pristine beauty. But Nishkalank Mahadev’s temple (Nishkalank – blemish-less or sinless; Mahadev – Lord Shiva) is under water during high tides in the sea and emerges during low tides to reveal itself majestically, promising its devotees to wash away all sins. As it did for the Pandavas in the epic Mahabharata, when they wanted to atone for the sin of killing their brethren, even though they were all evil incarnated.

During normal times, the temple gets drowned in the sea water, only the flags on the top of the temple are visible. The pillar of the temple is of 20 feet height. Sea water level reaches till the top of the pillar during normal hours, i.e. before 1 PM. Visiting time starts from afternoon 1 PM till night 10’o clock. During these hours the God of sea clears the path for devotees to visit the temple. Again after 10 PM the water level increases and temple will get drowned in the sea water.

Myself was born and brought up in Bhavnagar, so let me add for information to all the Shiv-Bhakts that Bhavnagar city is full of Shiva temples such as:- (1) Gopnath Mahadev is an another ancient shiv temple very close to sea (2) Takhteshwar Mahadev is on a hill (3) Jashonath Mahadev (4) Bhidbhanjan Mahadev (5) Juvaneshwar Mahadev (6) Barshe Mahadev (there are total 1200 small shiva-lings. Locals are very enthusiastic Shiv Worshippers & best time to visit Bhavnagar is in the holy month of ‘Shravan’ .
Gopnath Mahadev is close to Talaja village – about 80 KMs. from the Bhavnagar city. Located on the shore of the seaside on the Gulf of Khambat, this Shiva temple is where the devotional poet Narsinh Mehta supposedly had his spiritual experience almost 500 years ago. Set on the seashore, the temple is an ideal spot for all wanting a spiritual and natural trip. The coast in this area is full of tiny islands and offers a picturesque delight to the onlooker.
Thanks for the valuable information
It is really a wonderful news for all the Devotees of Lord Shiva. Infact, though Lord (God) is all pervasive, still we being human beings are unable to identify the holy places.
Definitely I pray the Lord Shiva to shower his Daya Amrutha for the sender of this great article.
I make a point to visit this temple on my next trip to Gujarat

Dear Sir
Good day

Hi, Mahadev – Lord,
Almighty of God Shiva is a Aadi Guru and thy is Srushti also for everybody.
Many thanks to author for sharing these unique and non-widely known holy places in great India!
It was not known to us so long , we know about so many temples but this was unknown to me. my thanks go to the gentleman who send this mail and informed us.
OM NOMO SHIVAYA NAMO.
A very pleasant news. I wish readers from all over India should write about unknown (to others) temples in their respective states for the benefit of others.
We have temples in sea. This is built in low tide. Each has its own history, geography and power.God/s are every where as Bhakata Prahlada(Vishnu) and Kannappa (Shiva) at Sri-Kala-Hasti near Tirupati have attained moksha.
Like that many places are there. They did not ‘select’ the place. They became ‘holy’ afterwards.
So one can worship with full devotion anywhere to get same results.Need not go anywhere.
A welcome exposition.
Note: As regards the Sthala Purana, there is a “Dravidian” style (i.e. Druido Aryan Aagamic) Siva Temple complete with Kalyani just outside the the Smashana Bhoomi at Kurukshetra where all the Veeras including Bheeshma were cremated. This is close to the marked that commemorates where Dakshayani’s left leg fell. This temple marks the place where Krishna makes the Panadavas perform the Prayishchitha Yajna for Pithru and Bhrathru Hathya. This temples escaped Ashoka and the Moslems because, located in a hollow, it was covered up with sand to hide from the vandalizing desecrators. This temple ranks immediately after Rameshwaram (Where Rama performed Prayischitha Yajna for killing the great Shiva Bhaktha Ravana) and above the Shiva Kshtras of the Narmada, in importance for Prayischhitha to expiate severe Samskaras attached with heinous crimes

Hearty Congratulations for creating this URL with Magnificent Pictures (of Temple in Sea, Shivaling, etc.)
However, the High Tide Timing changes daily as the moon’s angle with the Sun changes (from pratipadaa to PorNimaa tithee).
Normally on all PorNimaa days the High Tide is at around 18=00 Hours in the evening. Therefore, the Timings to visit this Temple also need to depend on “tithee”. This information may be kindly upadted, because the readers will otherwise get mistaken and arrive at the spot at wrong time.
Many thanks for sharing the information
THANKS A LOT, THIS POST ONCE AGAIN PROVED THAT INDIA IS A LAND OF SPIRITUALITY. OUR SONATAN DHARMA IS REALLY ETERNAL. ANY OTHER RELIGION TRY TO PROVED THAT THEIR RELIGION BASED ON SCIENCE, BUT OUR HINDU REGION SCIENCE FOLLOW HINDU RELIGION AND CULTURE. AFTER GETTING SOME CLUE FROM OUR HINDU RELIGION SCIENCE TRY TO INVENT THE FACT. THIS IS SUPREMACY OF OUR CULTURE. THANKS VERY VERY THANKS FOR THAT POST.
I have visited Gujrat two times but unfortunately I could not visit this shiva temple as I did not have any knowledge about this Shiva Temple. Many thanks to the author for publishing this. OM NAMO SHIVAY.
Very good knowledgeable information i really convey my heartiest thanks. Om Namo Shiva.
Namaskar and many thanks to the Authors for revealing this holistic picturesque information on such ancient wonders where we are in kaliyug covered with thick veils of maya, pondering our thought perceptions to always look into empirical value / scientific proof and reasoning to believe and follow the scriptures of ancient idhikasas & puranas, while these temples are the living truths beyond centuries as an empirical proof demonstrating the Natural phenomenon surrendering itself in prostration to the ALMIGHTY’S POWER. Let GOD ALMIGHTY BLESS US ALL TO HAVE HIS DARSHAN ON THIS WONDERFUL STHALA. OM NAMO NAMASHIVAYA .
