American-born Geshe Michael Roach, a fully ordained Buddhist monk, is in Varanasi for a discussion on ‘How to Use the Great Ideas of the Bhagavad Gita for Business and Personal Success’.
Before heading towards Banaras Hindu University, Roach spoke to iamin about the influence of the Bhagavad Gita in his life. He said that the Gita is one of the greatest classics of world literature which can change a person making them calm, focused and successful.
He added that despite being an American, he has personally experienced changes in his life after following the Gita.

Speaking further, Roach said, “During my childhood, my mother was diagnosed with cancer, which was a difficult phase in my life. That time, an Indian girl in my class advised me to visit India. In 1973, when I was 21, I visited India and studied the classics of India for 25 years.”
“After reading the Gita, I realised the need to promote its teachings and formed the Andin International Corporation in association with three friends. The Corporation’s profits soared to 250 million dollars and had over 10,000 workers. After reaching this high, which I sold it to American business magnate Warren Buffet in 1999. With the money received, I formed the ‘Diamond Cutter Institute’ to fulfill my dreams of promoting the teachings of the Gita. The Institute now has various centres across the globe,” he said.
The beginning of the Asian Classics Input Project
In 2006, Roach used the profits of his business to establish the Asian Classic Input Project to promote and protect Tibetan language and manuscripts. Under the project, various Indian and Tibetan manuscripts were translated into English. Until now, as many as 20,000 manuscripts have been translated and put them online for free.
His best-selling business and personal success book, The Diamond Cutter, has been translated into more than 30 languages around the world.
Meanwhile, Roach, after his stint in Varanasi will visit Bangalore on February 29, New Delhi on March 2 and finally Ahmedabad on March 4.

Roach is blessed. He is blessed that he studied the classics of India for 25 years, and that from the young age of 21! Most English-educated Indians have not even a passing acquaintance with our classics, leave alone ‘studying’.. His life is an inspiration. Who can say he is an American? He is more of an Indian than most of us. He must have been one of us in the past, now born in America for a purpose. I wish him success in his efforts for the Tibetan people. The plight of Tibet proves the main point of the Gita- that sometimes, evil does not end , unless the evil-doers are disposed of! Otherwise, why did Arjuna have to fight?
Happy to note that people are realising the greatness of Bhagavad Geetha. I being an Indian did not get a proper chance to learn it in detail. From here and there I have grasped some facts . Now I must go into details !!!
it is great where as Indian intellectuals and and other religious groups describing this is RSS agenda to saffron’ise Indian educational systems. You Americans are reformers accept virtue and noble activities where ever they found May god bless America.
WOW! Roach is AMAZING! Well focused in his mission!
May Lord Krishna bless you for giving this wonderful news. May this Krishan Bhakt succeed in his mission to spread the message of Shrimad Bhagwad Gita around the world.
this is great news.
there is so much wealth in India , it baffles the mind.
but we have to start somewhere!!
there are also great gurus/avatars there, and at the same time many fake/dodogy gurus that are after all your money.
just watch out and be smart.
yes we can go on learning. great news.
our biggest challenge is to transform the poor or poverty. everybody should be rich in every way.
there is no reason to be poor. we are doing something wrong as god has provided enough for all. so whats missing……. just think about it????
naveen /south africa
every Indian should read this . All people other than Indians have begun to understand the glory and rich of Indian Culture , religion and the Importance of Bhagawad Gita and hence start reading.
Roach is a truly blessed person and an example to us who are hell-bent on copying the western life style. JNU students are an example… there are many JNUs and lefties who are foolishly drunk with their foolish knowledge of communism and class struggle (so called). God must have a plan for humanity!
Wonder why is he a Buddhist monk if he had studied Bhagavad Gita and promoting now after selling his Business? Why advise others on Business success when he himself has sold his business?-Is this the message of The Gita?…to promote business and personal success…hmmm….sounds like how to use a solid golden Bar as a good hammer to build home furniture.Sorry for my scepticism but those who truly are interested in The Gita…please refer to the well established commentaries on this song of God.
we are all spiritual souls from our births and we were growing in our mother’s womb the divine being carried out all spiritual duties and the best spiritual foods for the best of the growing foetus in her womb. she visited all the shrines performing the simple spiritual prayers. we are gifted spiritual souls and in return we must carry out all our spiritual duties for the mothers for them to lead the happiest spiritual with full of smiles and praises for us.
feed the needy and hungry beings the best humanitarian love we should share with all as millions of hungry beings are perishing due to hunger, poor or no medication and unhealthy living conditions. millions are spent and wasted for unnecessary thrifty occasions and if that money utilized for the needy many hungry beings are well fed and taken care.
Bhagavadgita is one of the four boons from the Mahabharatawhich has multifaceted features and multiple applications. it is said yavai drushtih sa vai srushtih.Bhagavadgita is a great source to illustrate this. Lord Krishna is yogesvaresvara. He turned stubborn arjuna gripped by moha and smruti loss into a fruitful warrior adhering to his dharma . Dharma management is a must to the good kshatriya(su kshatriya). However many aspects are explored and used practically the scope in gita remains inexhausted. it has good importance.s

This is a polite & humble request! How does an semi-literate person like me get in touch with such a scholarly person like Mr Roach. Where can I find his email address, so that I can write no more than six lines. I do not wish to waste his most precious time, for some triviality info but for me it is vitally important. Many thanks.
Take a Bow Mr.Roach! I have started Bhagavat Gita (Now on the Seventh Chapter). Your contributions in spreading the Holy Scripture further inspires millions of people like me
