It was past mid-day when I reached the small temple dedicated to the guardian deity of the hills. He is Karuppusamy sporting a long moustache, his stretched right hand holding a sword and body decked with ornaments. The journey was tiring and I had trekked over five hours from the base camp. A half an hour climb lay ahead to the top of the hill.
Three hours into the trek, I had stopped at a cave dedicated to Goraknath. The cave was naturally cool and its stillness and energy difficult to describe. A perfect place to meditate in nature. The profound hatha yogi Goraknath meditated in the cave.
[wp_ad_camp_1]
A natural stream was running adjacent to the Karuppusamy temple and I decided to take a dip in its cool waters. As I stepped in the waters, numerous tiny fishes circled my legs and bit my feet. This was nature’s way to provide a tickling and soothing massage for the tiring feet.
As I immersed myself in the surrounding, I noticed a Sadhu in squatted position on a huge rock in front of me. He was in his forties with matted hair and a healthy physique. The sadhu keenly observed my activities for some time before he got up and walked towards the spring.
He stood beside me pointing his right hand towards the naturally dripping water through the rocks and his left hand pulling the saffron colored cloth wrapped around his waist. With the loincloth intact in his body, he seemed to enjoy the tiny fishes biting his feet in the cool waters.
I attempted to start a conversation with him curious to know about his life. He looked at me and said he will meet me in top of the hill after two hours. At the top of the hill amidst the dense forest is a temple dedicated to the very first yogi and the one who put the first thoughts of yoga in the human mind. The sadhu asked me to visit the yogi who is omnipresent since the beginning of time and not to miss the lunch served adjacent to the temple.
I continued my journey as I started to ascend the hill. It took over forty-five minutes to reach the peak and I sat down to meditate in the powerful space.
As I got up and walked, I was greeted by a bunch of busy monkeys. The monkey tribes provide you constant company from the base camp all along the trek. A shed adjacent to the main complex serves free food throughout the day. I walked into the shed to enjoy the simple food and relaxing atmosphere.
Outside the shed, the sadhu was promptly waiting for me sitting in squatted position puffing a beedi. He greeted me as I sat down next beside him. There was a long pause before I began the conversation.
“Tell me about yourself. Where are you from?”
The Sadhu preferred to converse in broken English.
“I am a Naga Sadhu from Rishikesh. I come down south to visit this hill every two years. I am leaving tomorrow to Ujjain for the Kumbh mela where I will meet my guru”
I continued to enquire. “why did you become an ascetic?”.
“It is a long story”, he said. “I never believed in god nor in spirituality until I was 22 years old. I never visited temples and wasn’t interested in any rituals”.
He continued after a pause.
“I was 22 years old. During a summer, I had come down all alone to these hills for some fun and trekking. I had trekked for eight hours and lost my way. I was tired and exhausted looking for directions. It was getting darker and I was extremely worried”.
“As luck would have it, I saw three men at a distance. I frantically shouted and waved at them. They turned and walked towards me. As they came closer, I could guess they were in the late forties. I explained my situation to them. They said I had a long way to go and asked me to follow them”
“I followed them as they walked. The men were highly energetic and I was struggling to keep the pace”.
“I enquired about their age. I was shocked and could not believe when one of them said he was 90 years old and the others in their eighties. Being one-fourth their age, I was struggling to walk at half their pace”.
“Seeing my plight, they stopped and pointed me to a tree. One of them asked me to walk to the tree and pluck some leaves. I promptly followed their instructions and came back with handful of leaves. I was instructed to pick 4-5 leaves and chew. The leaves were slightly bitter and I chewed”
“As I gulped the pulp down my throat, I could sense a spurt of energy in my body. I felt totally refreshed. To my amazement, the men told me that I will not be able to find the tree again. The tree is visible to those who are in the path”.
“I was very curious and enquired about them. The eldest one said they were disciples of Agastya Muni and I was lucky to have encountered them. This totally baffled me”.
“For the next two hours I walked briskly keeping to their pace as I continued to inquire. I had a number of questions about life, religion and spirituality. I am not going to go through the questions and answers with you. However, I would like to say that their response was enlightening and I felt a sudden transformation”.
“I asked them, where is Agastya Muni?”
“They stopped and pointed me towards a cave. An old woman was standing at the entrance and invited me inside. It was a pitch dark cave. She gave me a lamp and asked me to go inside. I nervously walked inside holding the lamp making my way into the darkness. Within few yards, the cave opened into a larger space”.
“The larger space was lit. I saw a man in sixties with a long white beard and white robes. He was of normal height. I could feel the divine energy around him as I stood in front of him with folded hands”.
“He introduced himself as Agastya. He did not talk much and indicated to me that my journey is about to begin. He asked me to go to the Himalayas for self-transformation. He immediately asked me to leave”.
“I hurriedly came out. The old women and the men outside were not to be seen”.
“This is it, I decided. I took a train to Varanasi the following week and spent time in the city for two months before I reached Rishikesh. I met my guru in Rishikesh who initiated me into the Naga sect in the Giri order. I became an ascetic”.
“I roamed in the Himalayas for the next 15 years. I had numerous encounters with wild animals but they would never harm me. It was a divine experience and very difficult to explain. I come down south every two years to this place I revere where I met Agastya muni”.
I enjoyed the conversation with the Naga Sadhu and his experience. I have grown up listening to stories of Agastya muni. His tales go back to as old as 15,000 years. He accomplished what others would have taken several life times.
I was ready to leave. The Naga sadhu opened his yellow bag and gave me a handful of ladoos. A bunch of monkeys surrounded him and he did not disappoint them. He said the monkeys will keep me company along my way as I started my descent down the hill.
My Journey to Chaturagiri in the western ghats during April 2016.
Very nice interesting article, but where is it located in south?
Aa wonderful and exciting till I complete the reading. That is our treasure of knowledge Rushies have given us. Thanks a lot.
i am amazed to hear agasthya muni is alive
Very nice..more to come I hope..
It is really fantastic story about the Agasthya Maha Muni who could give darshan to a non-aesthetic person and converted him into an Aesthetic person.
Matters like would be very interesting and this should be an eye opener to those who argue that there is no God.
Thank you once again for giving a nice article about the saintly life of great sadhus of India.

Your journey to Chaturagiri hill in Western ghats is really awesome. Meeting and conversing with ascetics is a God’s gift and it will inspire spiritual knowledge and strong devotion also one will have divine vibration which will ultimately show the the right path to reach the abode of one’s deity. The ascetic who gave his own divine experience with Agasthya Maharshi is a God’s blessings for him to come out his worldly bondages. Ultimately every one has to strive for the liberation from the human birth that will be the final and it will be eternal.
where is this temple? which state, which city, etc. more details would be enlightening to others who are interested in travelling & exploring spiritual sites. Thanks in advance. Sridama das
Marvellous exposition of the episode meeting with Saint Agastya.
It is amazing that India is probably the only country in the whole world where one can meet highly realized masters even today. It is truly a PUNYA BHOOMI. Unfortunately the people madly seeking material possessions have very little interest in the spiritual matters and are totally ignoring the wonders around and amidst them.
namaskars…
The experinces related in the article are not only awesome
and also add to our sense of spiritualty
Wow… Amazing article… Pls keep posting as they are required to quench our thirst for spiritual dose.

Namaskaram,
The article is very divine. My husband too went to Chaduragiri. It is located near Madurai and Srivelliputtur in Tamilnadu.

being associated with Guru Agasthya Muni is our previous birth’s gift. Unless you are destined, you can not get the arul of Guru. Without Guru’s guidance, no one can reach the goal and the ppurpose for which he has come to this earth. Follow Dharmic path and relinquish worldly desires (slowly) and always do good deeds to elevate yourself in life. I had number of experiences in Sethuragir Malai and each such experience is a valuable guidance which you are receiving directly from the divine force. You should always concentrate as much as possible and visit temples especially the one built during Sathya Yuga. Keep always occupied with divine energy and experience yourself. You need not make advertise and go on spreading the same to public about your experience. Each one will have his own experience depending upon the level he has claimed.
Sethuragiri is set to be spiritually higher and Kailash. All su-atmas have to have divine experience by visiting this holly place.
sairam.blessed to read such inspiring events.details of the places will be very helpful in case some are capable of going there.blessed
Awesome! You are lucky enough to have this experience. This is an inspiration all the seekers..
This is wonderful and your experience is an inspiration to all the seekers on the way to Spirituality.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. There are so many phenomenas in this world that science can never be able to relate or explain.
very interesting story, thanks for information publish
This is truly mindboggling experience. You are really fortunate to meet the Naga Sadhu and have Darshan of them. India is the only country where , even today , the realized masters are roaming freely around us but unfortunately , due to materialistic comforts we can’t see them. We all Hindus must impart our own Values , Education System to our Childrens to maintain our rich cultural heritage and ensure spirituality is maintained , transferred from one generation to the other without spoiling them. Please guide us also so that we can also take up this journey and get blessed. Please do call me and guide. Regards
Blessed arenthose for whom such miracles happen.Very human and sceptic that i am with no knolwledge and experience ,it is difficult to believe its actuality
Thanks for your comments. I am unable to reply individually as I did not see an option. This link http://sathuragirikanjimadam.org/en-about-us.html provides you additional information and location.
Please give details of the place so that more people may bemefit from this experience.thank you

Life full of everything but base on your perferance that what you are looking for.We are search for devine life but in India most of people didn’t realize and they are searching for material world.
Very nice article. Our country Bharat is a holy land. I live in Italy Italians miss India more than I do.
Gods grace I had an oppertunity to visit Shirdi, Rishikesh, Haridwar and Vrindavan with a group of Europeans all are devotees of Sathya Sai Baba. Our group was lead by a Spiritual master . I can never forget those holy places we could certainly feel divine energy, bathing in Ganga at Haridwar was an excellent experience.

really wondering to here these all sir
Wonderful article Sir. God bless
South India is really a blessed Land; For those who don’t know, there are innumerable innumerable holy places and holy persons in Tamil Nadu. Another thing may be you know is – holy places radiate energy. So you can be miles away from a holy place and still receive it’s holy energy. I met saints in the mountains but also I had great Darshans in Temples. I go to these places for 20 years now; Three years ago I went to the temple of Murugan in Tiruchendur. I ask the priest to be very near to the murthi for the Darshan (you know the ego of the bhakta!). He placed me just at the feet of Lord Murugan. Oh my God ! I stayed let say less than one minute and I received a massive blast of energy, light and heat. Wow. I was shocked. It saw so strong that I decided to leave. I barely found the way out. I sat on a bench near the sea (many benches there, I understand why now). I was in full meditation, in full ecstasy and my being was like a rocket catapulted into outer space. Super Intense. Of course I visited many temples and places where I received huge darshans but not like this one. When I managed to opened my eyes after one hour, it was dark outside. I decided to go back to my hotel on my bike but I was still in the same state. So I drove very slowly, I don’t know how I got to my lodge. leaving the town the next day, I felt the temple radiating energy several kilometers away. I never do drugs nor alcohol etc. (when you have darshans, drugs seem a dangerous & ridiculous way) and I’m not a deep meditator. This energy was a bit too strong for me; Tamil People always told me that Lord Murugan’s energy is very strong. Now I can tell boys. Beware people when you meet these siddhars or visit these places. They are full of energy. Be prepared to be shaken and don’t worry. Don’t stay long, come back again to adapt your being to the level of energy. You need to purify yourself with prayers, morals, good speech, meditation and fasting, no sex, no TV, no alcohol etc. for 21 days at least.
Remember we are not here to visit of have experiences but to pray and praise the Lord and be ready to come back to it.
Dear Sir
Good day
Excellent one. Wonderful experience even while reading the article. No doubt our Saints and Rishies are still living, one should have the blessings of them to see and interact with them. Nice one. Ram Ram.

REALLY VERY INTERESTING & SPIRITUALY TOUCHED MY HEART ABOUT THE HILL.
KINDLY POST THE EXACT PLACE IN SOUTH INDIA TO VISIT SUCH A GOOD SHRINE
Thanks for sharing knowledge with us….. thanks a lot…
I have been wanting to visit…Lords Grace when will it be.?
I don t have the word to say thanks to the writer. Only going through the article I am spiritually motivated. I shall try to visit the place in my life.
Remember that these hills are sacred too. They are not just mountains but sacred bodies, places of passages. Tribal people talk to stones, trees, there. Walk with reverence, open mind. But don’t play the spiritual tourist. Around these mountains you have magicians, sorcerers too. Their eyes are like razor blades and they scan you like a laser when looking at you. If you meet one, don’t look, say something nice and go away. I met a lady 90 years old, she talked with a deep voice, doing gestures and jumped 2 meters high when a demon was taking her body during trances. Because she liked me she’s never done anything bad to me.
I’ll speak about my most unpleasant encounter with a magician. It took me 2 months to meet him. I had to learn telepathy with one of his disciples. This was an amazing experience made on a stone platform outside the village. Then, without a call, I met him one night up in the mountain. An old man came to me, he introduced himself, talked to me by telepathy and controlled my body & mind by playing fantastic mudras. I was transformed into a puppet. I was so frightened by the turn of events. I turned away, shouted I didn’t want that. Then I turned back, looked everywhere, he was not there anymore… I was free of his grip but more surprised by his disappearance. I ran down the hill. And never asked to play with black magic again.
If you want to meet saints or Siddhars, just ask Lord Shiva. He’ll direct you toward them, for sure. don’t expect anything or anyone. just be open and they’ll contact you in one form or another.
And if you want to meet Lord Shiva, you can’t see him but you can be in his energy for a very short time. He has space serene energy (not warm like Lord Ganesha, not boiling like Sri Shakti not powerful like Lord Murugan) you’ll see intense light and may be merge with Shiva. Then you’ll come back into this heavy world changed for ever. Siva Siva
VERY MUCH INTERESTING AND HEART-THROBBING ARTICLE.
