Of all the deities in the Hindu pantheon, by far the most complex and mysterious to me is Śiva. Devotees and scholars alike have attempted to pierce the shrouds of textual and archaeological history to understand his origin, nature and evolution. Yet he continues to defy comprehension and definition.
Some, following John Marshall, have sought him in the phallic emblems, baetyls, seals and sculptures of the Indus Valley Civilisation. Others like Doris Srinivasan place his origins firmly in the early Vedic fold, and in the Vedic deity Rudra. Still others like Phyllis Granoff point to the textual and iconographic chasm between the Vedic Rudra and the classical Śiva, indicating a need for serious contemplation and research to understand how, if indeed they are one and the same deity, the transition and transformation came about.
[wp_ad_camp_1]
Rudra’s nature from the early Vedic to the late Vedic period embodies continuities and differences. We find that his benign aspect increasing gradually while his destructive aspect declines, though remains. Rudra of the Ṛgveda is a minor deity, a storm god with just three hymns dedicated to him: 1.114, 2.33 and 6.46. (He appears along with Soma in 1.43 and 6.74). His dual nature is already evident. Prone to anger and quick to dispatch weapons especially arrows against those who enrage him, he is also a deity with healing remedies and a provider of good luck. He is the flame-red boar of heaven, youthful with braided hair, powerful lips, merciful hands, tender-hearted and easy to invoke. Father of the Maruts, dazzling like the bright sun, powerful like a wild beast, swift, with the destructive power of lightning, storm and fire, he is lord of the sacrifice, of song and the physician of physicians. One of the adjectives used for him is indeed śiva (auspicious), but not exclusively. It is used for Agni and Indra and is also the name of a people in the Ṛgveda (7.18.7) The classical iconography (candra, Gaṅgā, liṅga) so familiar to us today is completely absent.
By the time of the composition of the Yajurveda saṃhitas, Rudra has grown tremendously in stature. His importance and physical appearance in the minds of the ṛṣis has changed. Now he is clad in skin, dwells in the mountains, is aged and has a thousand eyes. Ambika is mentioned for the first time in the Vedic corpus at this stage, not as his wife, but as his sister. In what J Bruce Long calls the “embodiment of divine ambivalence”, both the auspicious (śiva) as well as malevolent (rudra) aspects are developed in the renowned Śatarudriya prayer which occurs in the kṛṣṇa Yajurveda and with some modification in the śukla Yajurveda. From being a minor atmospheric deity in the Ṛg saṃhita, he has become Viśvarūpa and his presence can be felt in streams, ponds, banks, on the road, on barren land, in the cow pen, in the heart the whirlpool, in the dust and mist.
Now addressed as Nīlagrīva, Śitikanṭha, Giriśaya (mountain dweller), Viṣāpaharaṇa (one on whom the deadliest poison has no effect), and Paśupati, he is the lord of the forests, trees, fields and plants. In the Śatarudriya is also evident his all-inclusive divinity which is extended to wanderers, thieves, tricksters, robbers and pilferers. His Rudras/gaṇapatis are the lords of carpenters, potters, blacksmiths, fishermen, hunters and the Niṣādas, a non-Vedic tribe. While the Śatarudriya becomes a central text in the worship of the Purāṇic Śiva centuries later, there are just as many features that are unfamiliar (as are familiar) to the devotee who reads it for the first time. For instance, Rudra as Rathapati (lord of chariots), Harikeśa (one who has green hair/green leaves as hair), Kūpya (of the well) and Avaṭya (of the pit/hole).
The Atharvaveda represents a further stage of elevation for the Vedic Rudra. Book XV of this saṃhita identifies him with all of creation in a language which is distinctly Vedic but addresses the deity as Eka-vrātya, vrātyas being not of the ārya community. (Read the first few hymns, or the whole book in translation here. He becomes Mahādeva and holds the bow of Indra, erstwhile chief of the Vedic gods. The texts speak of seven attendants of this deity including Bhava, Īśāna, Paśupati, Śarva, Ugra, Rudra and Mahādeva. They are apart, yet a part of him – a theme which Phyllis Granoff takes up in her research on later developments in the persona of Śiva. Rudra/Mahādeva/Eka-Vrātya is fond of strong sura and shares a special relationship with a puṁścalī (a harlot, lit one who goes after men) but also becomes one with all that the ārya hold pure. Varuṇa, Soma and the seven ṛṣis follow him; hymns like rathantara and brihat follow him, as do the ādityas, and viśvedevas. Mahadev Chakravarti posits the theory that Vedic Rudra is not of ārya origin and that the Atharvaveda represents his increased acceptance by the custodians of the ārya belief system.
The brāhmaṇas progress this continual and by now seemingly unstoppable ascent of Rudra. AB Keith says even the gods are afraid of him by this stage. By the time of the composition of the Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad (see ŚU 6.18) Rudra has become the one god, the one who creates brahman and bestows the Veda upon him/it. At ŚU 3.2 we encounter a familiar theme: “There is only one Rudra; he has not tolerated a second who would reign over these worlds by his sovereign powers. After drawing in all beings he stands as the protector at the end of time, turning West towards men” Clearly by this period, a cult of Rudra (widely accepted today as a precursor to Śaivism) has been established. Further evidence is to be found in Patañjali’s Mahābhāṣya. Commenting on Pāṇini’s sutra V.2.76, he talks of discreet followers of the deity – Śiva-bhāgavatas, who were āyaḥśūlika (possessing iron spears/lances) and daṇḍājinaka (holders of a staff and wearing animal skin). Patañjali is dated circa second century BCE, while the Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad is thought to have been composed between the sixth and the fourth century BCE.
He remains connected to the Vedic ritual as can be seen in the śrauta and gṛhya sutras. Over and above that it is recommended that he be adored in practically all walks of life. Śāṅkhāyana gṛhyasutra prescribes Rudra worship to sick people. The Pāraskara gṛhyasutra directs “adoration” when crossing a path, approaching a cross road, swimming across a river, getting into a boat, entering a forest or climbing a mountain, passing by a burial ground or a cow pen. For Rudra clearly has come to inhabit the universe. The Hiraṇyakeśī gṛhyasutra recommends the same if one chances upon a cattle dung heap, is plunged into a river, is near a creeping snake, by a sacrificial site or a big old tree.
So far we have touched upon the trajectory of Rudra in the early and late Vedic texts. As yet there is no consensus as to the origin of this deity. Was he pre-ārya? Was he contemporary but external to the ārya? Was he a mountain or a forest god? A malevolent force of nature? Or was he clearly as ārya as Agni, Vāyu and Soma, as Doris Srinivasan would have us believe? Did he gain all his epithets by absorbing the gods of smaller autochthonous cults? What were the stories that led to his names in the Śatarudriya? We have traversed close to two thousand years of textual history and as yet we haven’t even reached the part where he becomes unequivocally Śiva or Śankara. I urge all to learn Sanskrit, read the Vedic corpus and find your own answers!
Ha Ha , Even Bramha & vishnu couldn’t figure out Shiva’s origin and end , the devotees and scholars attempts jujubee 🙂
The beauty, charm and what not of LORD shiva can not be described in words.
thanks to you sir
lord shiva was an Power full God for Ever………
Profound and scholarly; but by the end it has left me more confused than the blissful ignorance I started with! Hindu pantheon seems to have a complex evolutionary character. Despite strenuous exertions of so many scholars it remains as diffused as ever.
Different deities are conceptualized by the rishis from time to time depending upon the given situation, requirements and threats. Siva is parameswara when describing the supreme god in whom each and everything that you see or do not see exists and beyond whom there cannot be anything else. All others are deities who are supposed to bestow good and bad results according to the individual’s karma. You seek certain things from the deity who has been designed to provide that type of things. He is named according to his function in the cosmic structure
I am quite happy going through this article on Shiva and the thought process of John Marshal all about it.
I went through all details also the pictures here after given below.
Frankly speaking I can not be the donor but yes am always a well wisher. So ever open to extend on the spot help that I can extend. And, it is in practice. But, I would love to stay in Dayalu Baba’s Ashram for about 4 to 6 days, if the Bhaktivedanta Ashram can arrange it.
Thought provoking article. This increases the intensity of my urge to learn Sanskrit. Thanks you for the deep insights to Siva!
Shiva stands for ‘transformation’. Transformation is an individual journey and open to endless individual interpretations and applications all focused on: Create the future by destroying the past in the process of constant growth.
OM NAMA SHIVAYA…
OM NAMA SHIVAYA…
OM NAMA SHIVAYA…
I like to think of Him as the Destroyer; the destroyer of ignorance in me…
P. S.
How can I get copies of some of these great pictures?
Who can & who dare to comment on Lord shiva
for whom, it was told that there is end of top and bottom of HIM.and many saints prahying him still searching.
wonderful clue to the mysteriousy of Indian gods, moreso the TRIMURTY.Thanks for this andplease keep us on your mail, always

Rudra Prasnah an eulogy to Lord Rudra, is a part of Yajur Veda, and in the middle portion of this we have the “shiva panchaakshara” mantra namely “Namah Shivaaya” which to my mind establishes a clear connection between Rudra & Shiva.
His children are also mysterious one with a head of an elephant, one with six heads and one born from the union of Hari and Hara
om namah siva,,,,,,,
ooohhhh in jyotish i am to follow Sade Shiva nowim confused
Nice article.Lord Shiva is considered to be Adi Yogi and the only Spirit that engulfs the whole Universe.Siva is the Supreme Deity and has no forms as all the Forms are His. Great Yogis have found His attributes and forms all merged in One within their MIND ONLY AS WHAT IS IN MACROCASM IT IS IN MICROCASM.This is a great process and may take several births and the Blessings of a Real Guru to attain the Siva state.
Shiva him self told me what he is.
All science is his his expression, he is ultimate authority of transformation ( Rudra) when he takes his creation ( which we observe) to an other dimension when it is nescessary which is death of this dimension to ensure rebirth of this dimension , when I asked why you made sorrow or death , he replied happyness can exist only when sorrow is there & likewise birth & death, his idol, shivaling is artististic expresssion of greatest scientist, phylospher, or the greatests who really seen, understood almighy in completeness, size of is function/aspect is infinitely vast, you know when you express small crux in long words u write prose, when bigger crux in less words u write poetry, when you express infinite crux only way is to express it by idol or figure & lord shiva told me about his gender you know its only shivaling, this is a real story when i was in coma for few days after severe accident, I can explain every natural phenomenon by shive expression of idol and shivaling basically I am a real atheist, he also made me understand clearly what he repents i do not have words to explain but let me try it was some thing like this that now shaitan has become smart he knows if shaitan look/talk/behave like demon he will be thrown out of society, so now he disguises as preacher/impressive to hypnotise & encroach in mindset & society ( Shaitan ab angrejji bolta hai MBA jaisi degree pass kar k aata hai) beliefs have abandoned my right to appear to enable shaitan to rule my creation he is apprehensive about appearing because his own people will say you are not almighty because you can not appear
Thanks.
I believe that the material nature is Lord Shiva and the material manifestation is at the supreme will of Lord Krishna. With
no definite personality is Lord Shiva and Krishna is represented by supreme personality. The duration of the material universe is represented in cycles of kalpa i.e a day of Brahma. In the material universe not even Brahma is free from the process of birth..death. Whereas we don,t find such a life in the case of Lord Shiva. The formless all pervading lord.
This article is based on the premise of the early historians and Indologists who believed in periods of Hindu philosophy such as Early Vedic Period (ca. 1500–1100 BCE), Upanisadic period, Puranic and Epic periods, Sutra period etc. The Brhad-aranyaka Upanisad (2.4.10) declares: “The Rg Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, Atharva Veda and Itihasas (like Mahabharata and Puranas) are all breathed out by the Absolute Truth. Similarly too the definition of the word Arya which led to nomenclature like Indo-Aryan peoples, Indo-Aryan migration, and Indigenous Aryans etc. All these have been rejected now.
It was natural for the early scholars to conclude that the Vedic literature lacked clarity and conclusiveness and that they were a hodgepodge of disharmonious texts. Modern Vedic scholars, largely out of academic habit give tacit approval to many of the first Indologists’ conclusions. While modern scholars adopt an ‘empiricist’ approach the acaryas advocate ‘sabda’ or hearing from higher authority. We suggest the new student take a look at Vedic literature through the eyes of the Vedas themselves, by returning to the original sastras and the commentaries of the acaryas. If one is really keen to understand Lord Siva or any other spiritual topic then one should begin reading Srila Prabbhupda’s books and the truth will be revealed.
Lord Siva ,as he is called in Tamil, lies in our breath, which is called VASI in Tamil. When we repeat it VASI.. VASI .. VASI , it becomes SIVA .. SIVA.. SIVA . As long one is breathing , SIVA resides in the body. If SIVA goes out, it is called SAVAM in Tamil. It means a dead body ( Corpse). When one dies, neither oxygen nor compressed air can bring life back into the dead body. So, it is prana , which is a carrier of LIFETRON , in which SIVA lies, can bring back life.
Only six sensed human beings can think of HIM. 3 decades ago, we had experienced the miracles performed by a SIDDHA purusha for nearly 13 years. He said the following :
6 sensed human beings should utter ” Om Namasivaya ” ;
7 sensed intellectuals must utter ” Sivaya Nama”.
8 sensed siddhapurusha should say ” Sivaya Siva”; 9 sensed Avatars should recite” SIVA SIVA “.
Only the 10 sensed Deities can utter ” SI”
God can be worshipped in 3 states by all- But even to worship HIM , we need his blessings.
Almighty is Formless
When he is Formless- he is called PARAMAISVA
The feminine aspect of His Consort is called Manonmani – Jewel of Mind.
When he is in Formless Form- he is called Maheswara .and this form is Sivalinga.
Formless Form – SIVALINGA. His consort is called UMA.
When we worship him in Form, he is GOD.
Form – GOD- Generation – Brahma ,and his consort is called Saraswathi. So, after birth, education is needed.
Operation – Vishnu, and His consort is called Lakshmi. For leading a life, wealth is needed.
and Destruction – Sankara, and His Consort is called Parvathi. For protection , courage is required.
In modern management terms, Paramasiva is the Chairman ; Maheswara is the Managing Director; Brahma, Vishnu, and Sankara are General Manager ( Production & Training ), General Manager ( Finance & Admnistration ), and Generral Manager ( Marketing & Customer Relationship ).
I will continue this series.
Westerners have a funny ,nasty habit of portraying themselves as archeologists, zoologists, palaeontologists or at best curious sightseers and start quoting enemies of Hinduism in the garb of locals and vilify our sculptures of yore.
To see the power of Mahadev/ Shivji let them go to AGAR MALWa in M.P. where the temple was renovated by a British colonel, who was rescued by Lord Shiva Himself from the marauding tribes of Afganisthan.
His wife prayed to Lord Mahadev in Agar Malva that they will rebuild the temple if the colonel ,missing for months ,leading an expeditionary force ,returns safely. The colonel on return told his wife that when he was about to be killed by a hoard of tribals,a huge figure arrived there with thrishul .on seeing this majestic warrior the tribals took to their heels.
This happened at the very Same time when Sri Rudram Chamakam was being chanted at the behest of the English lady,as per the Poojaris direction. Colonel could not believe this miracle till his wife convinced him of the Rudra/ chamakam chanting done in the temple for his safe return. This board or record can be found in the temple even today.
Har Har Mahadev
The article and thoughts shared by all the above are really thought provoking and my salutations to their wisdom. The open mind of some research oriented western scholars is helping the Hindus also to know more about infinite and undefinable Rudras i.e., Ekadasa Rudras. The Shivalinga is the form which is formless. The The Hindu scriptures preach the aspirants to start worship of deity and slowly move away to Formless state within self. Incidentally the Formless worship by Muslims is akin to Hindu worship of Shiva Linga or even SriChakra. But 99.99% of us remain at idol worship stage with out really understanding the concept. Even the Lalitha sahasranama also says’ Antarmukha Samaradhya bahirmukha durlabha’.
Sorry friends?Agar Malwa is in M .P and not in U. P.

Our Vedic culture cannot be seen as a mere history confining to dates such as 2nd BCE or 2nd AD. It dates back to thousands of years and at least 1 lakh years. All the spiritual experiences of sages were shared among them long back. At that time, there was only conversations among them and they use to remember and then pass on to their disciples and there were no scriptures. In our Vedic culture, Valmiki is treated as Adi Kavi i.e. first person to narrate spiritual facts in the form of a story i.e. Ramayan. As per the evidences available, even though Vedas, Upanishads and several other spiritual facts were in practice long back, they were systematically classified by the Sage Krishna Dwaipayana who for his systematic classification was called as Veda Vyas some time around in 3000 BCE. These were the original writings in Indian Civilization and until then whatever told by the sages was orally passed on from generations to generations. Now its a very long time that original texts might have been replaced by some other points by some people and at this length of time, we cannot attribute these lapses to anyone. At this juncture of time, it is very essential to extract the essence in Vedas, Upanishads and Puranas and try to put them in practice. It is very clear, if one goes through these ancient texts, the situations explained in the forms of stories exist even today’s society. If one goes through these texts even today we can learn what to do and what not to do in our day to day life to attain happiness and bliss and this bliss should not be confined to us and our circle of friends but pass on to the entire human race. Our standards are far below to try to analyse or criticize what has happened at that time.
There r several religions, Gods, Goddesses and beliefs and proofs. So dont comment or argue.Just b happy.

It is a good article to search and sketch thoughts on Siva going from RV down the current literature . It is seen the personality of Rudra deva is unique.Though he is a fierce and forceful God still he is accessible to the upasakas in a manner they want. There are several devotees who have marked the eminence of Rudra and got the experience and benefits. However he remains unfathomable but revealing to the Bhaktas. Rudra becomes Siva and Sadasiva owing to the grace of Paramesovari his consort. Sankara explained the vibhava of Siva in his two stotras Sivananda lahari and saundaryalahari. Both are connected to Siva. However talk on Rudra is sukta and it is to publish the vibhava of the god. Search is never complete but still the intelligence and anusthana form the only medium through which more facts about Rudra could be unearthed. Yajurveda gave us the clue to unlock the nature and other glory of Siva with the mantra namassivaya sivataraya ca. Siva is bound by the ordains of one superior to him directing. That is sivatara and it is Adisakti LaiitaTripurasundari. Om.Seers a re on hunt to understand his assets and antecedaents but they continue to be in mystery. that is the nature ofGod to be available and at the same time to remai as a goal of pursuit.
A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF INFORMATION…..THE INFINITE IS SHIVA, THERE SHOULD BE NO CONFUSION
As many have already observed this article is based on the speculative conjectures of early Indologists who had extremely limited understanding of non-Euro cultures and history and who tried to fit everything in their ‘6000 year old creation’ of Thomas Acquinas etc. It is their idea of dating Vedic chronology – Rig as old and Atharvan as much later.
The truth as revealed by great sages like Sri Aurobindo is that the eternal truth were gradually revealed and expressed in sounds and words(vedas) by sages who had the inner urge to meditate – the forms of the Supreme Being manifested as Creation were revealed to these sages and then transmitted thru the line of disciples.
It is similar to a person progrssively discovering a new land – its flora, fauna, rivers, mountains, people and culture – it does not mean the discoverer went to to embellish and improve his original writings which is what the Eurocentered scholars want us to believe.
By chanting “Om Namashivaya” silently for just 15 minutes during early morning hours, we can get peace and serenity in our every day life. This is my own experience. Just try and feel the difference.
This nice article only sees Siva from the way the Vedic people evolved Him to their benefit in their ritual aspects; but there is another non-Vedic side basically the non-Aryan Tamil version which brother Sankaranarayanan; touched very lightly. Here we see Siva evolving into a Yogic; Tantric and Theological aspects which are also of pre-Jain, Buddhist and Vedanta era.
The Yoga Sutras are definitely not Vedic in nature and there is so much Vedic literature which denounced and deplored the practice until seer Badarayana accepted and included Yoga as part of his 6 philosophies.
The same can be told of the Tantric practice which also has so much negative literature by the Vedic seers; but a practice that they were unable to eradicate and later came to be accepted in the Puranas. The Tantric practice evolved into great religious practices and gave rise to concepts like Ikiam; Vaa’mam; Paa’su Patham; Maa’Virtham; Kabaliham and so on. They were also the impetus for the Siva Bakthi Movement; another branch of the Siva movement. This is the forerunner of all the Saivam groups like Kashmir; Nepal and Veera Saivam. Also the great Nadarajah form is also from this group.
There is also the most evolved of the Siva movement of the PasuPathi concept of the 36+30+30 theology concept; which the various Vedic and non-Vedic Upanishads record; but both seer Badarayana and seer Sankara reject it; as it is the ONLY theology which accepts separate individual Souls. Jains; Buddhist and the Vedanta people do not accept the existence of a separate Soul.
This PasuPathi (Sivaniam) concept gave rise to many theologies like Paa’sana Vatham; Sangki Rathana Vatham; Siva Sama Vatham; AviKaara Vatham; Parinama Vatham, Petha Vatham and so on. This is the forerunner of the present Saiva Siddhanta philosophy.
It is very regrettable that this learned article completely ignored the other side of the Siva and it is urged that those interested to take up the Tamil language to learned about this portion of Siva which has a pre-Vedic heritage.
I would love to get the lyrics of the SivaSankara stotra which says Siva Sankara Hara Sankara hara me hara duritam. Please help.
Trajectory of Rudra
Basically the author has already prescribed to the Evolutionary theory.
“As yet there is no consensus as to the origin of this deity.”
Does consensus become an authority? Purpose of Shruti and Smruti is to bring a realization of the Maha Vaakya.
Was he pre-ārya?
There are no historic dates that are associated to “Arya”. Hence there is no question of Pre-Arya.
Was he contemporary but external to the ārya?
These emphasis that author makes has put an attitude of truth “sath bhavana” to Arya.
“Was he a mountain or a forest god? A malevolent force of nature? Or was he clearly as ārya as Agni, Vāyu and Soma, as Doris Srinivasan would have us believe…. find your own answers”
I am not sure what the author means by “was he”… we say “he is” and even better “sath” (truth) or “tat” (that).
Using your brain you can only do logical analysis. What Sanatana Dharma does is to enlighten a path to find that which makes you think. The concept called I or Aham or Aatma devoid of any that I identify as “Mine” or “Not Mine”
when a person without proper knowledge on vedas and its angas does mistake as such in article
let me add few points in brief
1) in very first part of rudra hridyaopanishad states
‘Rudra is the embodiment of all Devas. All devas are merely different manifestations of Sri Rudra Himself.’
so assuming that he replaced or became brahman(supreme infinite reality) later is ruled out
2) those who know niruktha and observe shata rudriam , might have know that soma means sa+uma (consort of uma )
3) on aryan non aryan : if u people look into kaustika and shathapatha brahmana , in that all devas fear for him because of violent appearance , here rest of deities were mild and noble , but rudra is overwhelming , which is discussed in vyartha suktha in such way , in reality , rudra and other dieties are not just aryan or dravidian but gods for all
4) funniest thing what i noticed is , owner of this article tries to date the veda (shatha rudriyam ) which none have done with precise result , i must insist him to read mahabharatha kirathaparva in which both krishna and arjuna praise shiva with shata rudriyam , if mb is real , then its an reference to show that , it existed prior to 5000bc or more
5)” Ambika is mentioned for the first time in the Vedic corpus at this stage, not as his wife, but as his sister”<< this the funniest part
namo hiraNyabaahave hiraNyavarNaaya hiraNyaruupaaya hiraNyapataye.ambikaapataya
umaapataye pashupataye namo namaH ” (Taittiriya Aranyaka 10.22.1 sri rudram)
since when did "pathi" got meaning of brother , with the basic common sense in vyakarana , pathi means husband or lord or owner
6) on shatarudraiya : as thief , carpenter etc , in same sri rudram , it states that he is creator of universe , lord of existence or reality , Councillor in assemblies , lord of riches , chief among soilders etc , why ignore this ?
shatarudriya narrates how rudra is omnipresent , half boiled heads think he is lord for certain community and other
7) one answer for who is Shiva as follows
krishna yajurveda , kaivalya
6. At the center of the lotus of the heart, meditating upon that which is pure, without passion, clear, without sorrow, unthinkable, unmanifest, infinite in form, auspicious, peaceful, eternal and the cause of Brahma.
7. Without a beginning, middle or an end, who is one, all pervading, of blissful consciousness, without form, wonderful, seated with the goddess Uma, the Supreme Lord, the ruler, bearing three eyes, with a blue neck, ever peaceful – by meditating upon Him the sages attain the source of all creation, the witness of all and that which is beyond all darkness.
8. He is Brahma, he is Siva, he is Indra. He is the imperishable, supreme self illumined Lord. He alone is Vishnu. He is the life giving breath. He is time, he is fire, and also the moon.
Siva in the form of iswara is greater than the Trinity and all the gods but at the same time He is also all the gods. This verse explains the truth behind the diversity of divinity and attempts to reconcile the diversity of the Hindu pantheon with the grandeur of the Supreme Brahman.
9. He alone is all this, all that was and all that will be and eternal. Knowing him one surpasses death. There is no path other than this to liberation.
10. By seeing the self in all beings, and all beings in the self, one attains the transcendental Brahman, not by any other means.
11. With the usual self as the lower portion of the fire stick and the syllable AUM as the upper part of it, by the practice of generating the flame of knowledge, the wise burns all his bondage.
12.That alone becomes the deluded self and staying in the body indulges in actions. In the wakeful state it gets gratification through such enjoyments as women, food and drink.
13. In the dream state, the jiva experiences happiness or sorrow in a make believe world created by his own maya. In deep sleep, when all is absorbed, he experiences sukham (happiness) under the influence of darkness.
14. Again the jiva on account of his deeds in previous lives wakes up and sleeps. He takes delight in the three cities. From him springs all diversity. He is the support, bliss, indivisible consciousness and in him alone dissolve the three states.
15. From Him are born the vital breath, mind, all the sense organs, the sky, air, fire, water and the earth, which supports all.
16. That which is the supreme Brahman, the self of all, who supports the entire universe, subtler than the subtle, eternal, that alone you are, you are that alone.
17. That by which the waking, dream and deep sleep worlds are illumined that Brahman I am. Knowing thus one is freed from all fetters.
18.I am the witness, pure consciousness and Sadasiva (the ever auspicious) and different from whatever that exists in the three worlds as the enjoyer, the enjoyment or the object of enjoyment.
19. All this is born from me alone. All this is established in me only. And all this does merge with me alone. I am that Brahman without a plural.
20. I am smaller than the atom. So also I am greater than the Universal Self. I am utterly amazing. Ancient. I am the Purusha. The Lord of the golden hue, I am Siva in manifestation.
21. I am without hands and feet, but with unthinkable prowess. I see without eyes and hear without ears. I know. I am formless, unknown to any and always pure consciousness.
22. From the different Vedas I am the one to be known. I am the author of the Upanishads and the knower of the Vedas. Merit or demerit do not attach to me. I am indestructible, and I am not subject to birth, body, sense or intellect.
23. Earth, water, fire, air, ether I have none. Knowing the true nature of the Supreme Self, the one who dwells in the cave of the heart, without impurities, without duality, the universal witness, free from (the distinction of) being and non being, one attains the being of the Supreme Self.
Thankyou for the wonderful article. The name J.Bruce Long leapt out at me because I studied with him at Haverford College in the late 1960’s. Since then I’ve practiced Vipassana meditation for 35 years and I’ve always felt grateful to him because he was a catalyst for my lifelong interest in Hinduism and Buddhism.

COOLING EFFECT. BESIDES OVER TO LINGA PROVISION FOR DROPLET OF WATER TO KEEP IT COOL.
ALL THE ATOMIC REACTORS ARE ON WATER FRONTS. COMMENTS ARE SOLICITED. ON MY OBSERVATIONS.
Always remembering God Shiva – Through Shiva Panchakashri sthrom- nagendra haraya thrilochanaya . .
This is again an attempt to establish westerners propagated Aryan theory, which made Britishers to rule easily by dividing ridge between north aryans and south dravidians. Thats how they could create Brown Sahebs and rule this vast country with only handful of Britishers.
“Of all the deities in the Hindu pantheon, by far the most complex and mysterious to me is Śiva.”
this is because Lord Shiva is not one among many and he is not hindu, not vedic.
Lord Shiva is a unique god that was ruling on the indian civilization before vedic (hindu) culture came to India. Then his cult was submerged by the hindu aryan vedic pantheon civilization. Do you see marks of Shiva on posters, bags, T-shirts in Indian cities ? No(except at junkies arambol beach, goa) Now you see his rare symbols in caves, mountains, deep inside the indian culture. India is a shakti cult dominated country. Because it is boiling, powerful, earthy. But Shiva is much much higher than those cults. You have to go deep to find his way. Good luck for your thousands of penance. Pray to him he is closer than your blood. (terms he, it, him, are inappropriate to tell this reality)
Innocence is simple, it is complex only for the tight headed. We all have become tight headed and stone hearted. So,how then will the waves of innocence be felt within ? Do u feel that a child is complex to understand? If yes, u have got to become one. With a child, become a child. So simple, . With Shiva, become Shiva, with innocence, become innocent. With Love, become Love. Love is lord Siva and only that is Real He. Without love, nothing else can claim to be shivam. Love and feel the innocence, there Siva exists. No vedas ,no Sanskrit is essential. Just remember the story of Nandanaar, a soul of low birth, yet gained the closeness and oneness with the Divine….,. Kaaraikaalammaiyaar….,
etc,, to mention just a few among many more. All had one, just that true trust and innocence of a child. Vedas are a big bundle of waste that will only depreciate our brain memory. Instead, broaden the heart with love and thankfulness . There lives Shiva, waiting aeons and aeons for his own dear child, who is none other but Himself.
All of the above is a mixture of glorious swirling multicolored light. Thankyou

Thanks for a brilliant and thrilling discussion by the readers of the glory of Lord Shiva!
Just like idol worship and temples are but a preliminary step to worship God who is then to be experienced by personal realization later, like that the debate on Vedas and classification etc. are but a starting point for the true goal which is to become Him that one is trying to learn about. Love is the best and true way to know and finally become Siva – as another reader Smt. Vijayalakshmi suggests also.
Shiva is indeed the most mysterious of all Gods known. He holds both extremes of calmness and ultimate Wisdom of Dakshinamurthy as well as the fierceness and primal raw power of Bhairava and Veerabhadra within His divine Self. He displays as Ardhanaareeswara – a divine state far above the human male and female or the human bi-gender state showing us the way to perfection. He is so near yet seems far. He imparted a valuable lesson in everyone of His interactions. He exemplifies self-sacrifice, simplicity, purity, compassion but is content with His image as angry and fiery. He is or can assume all non-human states such as the five elements of nature -telling us He is to be realized as beyond just a human form and is beyond human ways of comprehension. More eulogies i will share as they come…
Shiva is ‘Ashtamurthi’ – the eight vital manifeststions in creation that is comprised of five elements -earth, water, fire, air and sky; sun, moon and finally soul. He is ‘static’ resembling an ascetic in Tapas but yet present everywhere in each atom of creation; He is dynamic’ too as Lord Nataraja dancing the dance of creation.
