The following collection of photographs were taken between 1882 and 1883 and are in the archives of the Geological Survey of India. They provide a view of the ancient Kedarnath temple before it became a tourist attraction, when it was a lone, remote temple, only visited by a few sadhus.

Thank you for sharing.
When I travelled to Badrinath in the Year 2008, the roads were very narrow and the driver struggling to drive the bus very carefully. Seeing these photographs, especially the one indicating the road to Badrinath via Jyodishmuth, I wonder how people in those days visited these shrines. How many days they would have travelled to reach the holy place and then return. GOD is there and people believes it and travel despite the hardships and get blessed.
its shows that how the mordern man destroyed the purity of nature ….
Thanks for the post. Our culture is great and sharing such post increases respect for the places. Jai Bholenath. Thanks…
Pictures are Splendid. Now there are lot of changes.
modern man destoyes the tranquility, peace and spirutuality by monetising the places.
Thank you for sharing. I went to char dham in 2011. World of a difference form then to now. Just can not comprehend how our forefathers constructed a magnificent temples with the kind of approach we are seeing. Unbelievable and Humbling
Highly Spiritual feeling! The presence of GOD is felt from this rare pictures taken way back 132 years.
whether God be there or not ! but sure it was a thing of very very strong ( physically and mentally ) to reach there in 1800s ! I wonder – who made these temples ! up there ?
Nice to see these photographs. After 2013 tragedy, only glimpses of ruined kedarnath were in mind. Thanks for showing the original pictures.
awesome. Thanks for this.
Very Nice to see.
Blessed to see these pics . have been to kedar and badri last year June just before the natural disaster. Hope we can go there again some time.
Very pleased to see the temple Kedarnadh as strong as the mountains behind existing since long time and taken in 1882. The above writer says that he saw the ruins were of Kedarnadh. It is wrong as the photo shows that the temple is as intact as the mountain. The structures constructed with avaricious aims and the value given to the wrong deeds around the temple were destroyed in the recent floods probably to wash the sanctified place to its original level Almost like the petals of a lotus flower the mountains are protecting the temple in their mist and in silent and sanctified state and by just seeing the temple and the Lord in side we will get enormous strength and peace of mind. The silence that is reigning there can be seen and felt Actually the temples should be in such an atmosphere and nothing should intervene between the person and the God to give a satisfaction that God is hearing our prayers without any disturbance.
Wonderful……I am mesmorised
amazing !

thank you good god for we r in such a circle of love that each day we feel how close we r to our good great god, these pictures r so much bhakti bhav bhara.jaiho our nature of abundance where we have hindus pooja paath n shrines.meri aur aap ka saath har saas mei ho.
Om Namo Shivaya, May Lord Shiva bless with some common sense to those proud human beings who by virtue of their wealth want to buy everything of this world including the peace of Kedarnath. Shame to those who fly to kedarnath by helicopter in the name of pilgrimage thus destroying the tranquility of the place.
WoW!!
Hardik Dhanyawad!! Eeshwariya shakti mei vishwas dhrid ho gaya!!
Om namah Shivay!!
It is great experience to see theholy shines photoes of more than one century old. Many many thanks for providing such divine photoes to the readers. The photoes shows how our previous generations visited these holy places by taking so many hardships as there are no modern transport and communication system. After seeing these photoes i have a wish to darsan thes holy places
That’s why the saying in olden days was: Aaya to Badri, gaya to wudari!
All these photos depicts the real existence of GOD and the people’s devotion to reach HIM with all the Hurdles.
We of late started to play with these natures. Now the natures (GOD) thought that it is high time that HE should show His Play to us. We now are witnessing that, through the destructions in every part of the world and especially in India. Just take the proof of Kedharnath Temple’s photo of 1882 and the photos after the tragedy in 2013, they almost look alike, after the destructions of all ill-minded creations around the temple and leaving the main temple in tact..
These are only starters. Still the main play is yet to start. KALI IS COMMING TO END!
