"Bhagavad Gita was spoken by Lord Krishna to reveal the science of devotion to God, which is the essence of all spiritual knowledge. The Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna's primary purpose for descending and incarnating is to relieve the world of any negative, and undesirable influence that are opposed to spiritual development, yet simultaneously it is His incomparable intention to be perpetually within the reach of humanity" – Sri Ramanujar.

sri-ramanujar-1.jpg The primary purpose of Bhagavad Gita is to illuminate the realization of the true nature of divinity; for the highest spiritual conception and the greatest material perfection to attain the love of God. It is considered as one of the greatest spiritual books the world has ever known. In a very clear and concise way the Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna, describes the science of self-realization and the process by which human beings can establish their eternal relationship with God. In terms of pure spiritual knowledge, Bhagavad Gita is incomparable. Its intrinsic beauty is that its knowledge applies to all human beings and does not postulate any sectarian ideology or secular view. It is approachable from the sanctified realms of all religions and is glorified as the epitome of all spiritual teachings. This is because the proficiency in Bhavad Gita reveals the eternal principles, which are fundamental and essential for spiritual life from all perspectives and allows one to perfectly understand the esoteric truths hidden within all religious scriptures. Many great thinkers have all contemplated and deliberated upon its timeless message.

Sri Krishna shows His cosmic form to Arjuna in the battle field of Kurukshetra; and expounds the Bhagavad Gita (the essence of Upanishads) to him.

The Gita starts with the psychological upheaval in the mind of Arjuna, at the battlefield in Kurushetra, with Sri Krishna as his charioteer. Arjuna is disturbed at the thought of the destruction of his own kith and kin, as well confused about the pathway of righteousness.

sri-krishnar-1.jpgSri Krishna, the teacher of Gita addresses himself to the metaphysical question. Sri Krishna, in the Gita teaches that life itself is a battle. All the people in the world are to work. Work is a spirit of detachment; it is as good as renunciation. Even those who have risen above the necessity of work would do well to work without desire to set an example to others, to transform work into spiritual Sadhana. Give up all selfish desires, work for work’s sake, do your duty for duty’s sake and love for love’s sake. When our mind is fixed on the supreme reality, when we become Lords of yoga and Masters of selfless and detached action, and when all our powers are used for the good of the society then all prosperity, material and spiritual benefits will follow as a matter of course. The Gita is one of the clearest and comprehensive summaries of perennial philosophy. Sri Krishna was a great spiritual teacher who gave the character of religious liberty to all, harmonized all paths of yoga and made religion easy and brought it to the common man. He made us to feel the presence of God in our midst and showed us how to live in the world with compassion and equanimity, and placed before us the highest ideals of love, knowledge, yoga and work.

Sri Krishnar says "I am the goal and the way".

In Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna declares himself as the Creator, Sustainer and Destroyer of the entire Universe. In particular in Chapter X and XI, Sri Krishna shows the entire Universe is but a fraction of His unbounded splendour and that everything emanates from Him and merges in His cosmic form.

sri-ramanujar-2.jpgSri Krishna declares unequivocally that He is the goal of existence and advises Souls to surrender to Him (Chapter XVIII.66). This is the sum of all teachings and is called "Charmasloka" in the Srivaishnava sampradayam. - "Sarva Dharmaan Parityajya Maam Ekam Saranam Vraja, Aham tva Sarva papebyo Moksha Isyaami maa Sucha".

This Maha mantra taught to Arjuna by Lord Sri Krishna and enshrined in Bhagavad Gita says "Leaving every other method taught for salvation, you surrender to me and only to me. I will cleanse you from all sins and give you salvation".

The Charama sloka of Srimad Bhagavad Gita was voluntarity taught to Sri Ramanuja. Sri Nammazwar has enshrined this very same principle in Tiruvaimozhi.

Sri Ramanuja preached the Bhakti Marga. The stress was on "Prapatti" or complete surrender to Sriman Narayana in total abandonment of ego as exhorted in Bhagavad Gita.

According to Sri Ramanuja the fundamental teachings of the Gita in regard to the pathway to man’s perfection is Bhakthi. He distinguishes instrumental Bhakthi from intrinsic Bhakthi. It is a steady flow of loving meditation directed to the Supreme Being.

  7. Jabali Upanishad

    Translated by P. R. Ramachander

    Published by celextel.org

Om ! Let my limbs and speech, Prana, eyes, ears, vitality

And all the senses grow in strength.

All existence is the Brahman of the Upanishads.

May I never deny Brahman, nor Brahman deny me.

Let there be no denial at all:

Let there be no denial at least from me.

May the virtues that are proclaimed in the Upanishads be in me,

Who am devoted to the Atman; may they reside in me.

Om ! Let there be Peace in me !

Let there be Peace in my environment !

Let there be Peace in the forces that act on me !

The Sage Pippalada approached Sage Jabali and asked him, “Oh God like sage, please teach me the secret of the absolute philosophy. What is Thathwa (principle)? Who is Jeeva (being)? What is Pasu? Who is Ishwara? And what is the method for salvation?” Thus asked sage Jabali explained to him everything as follows:

Jeeva (being) is nothing but God (the Lord of all beings - Pasupathi) himself who is acting the role of egoism. That Jeeva (being) is the Pasu. Pasupathi is he who knows everything, who does the five jobs like creation, and who is the Lord of all beings. Pasu (in common parlance) are those animals which eat grass, which do not have viveka (knowledge to differentiate), which are driven by others, which are made to work in jobs like agriculture and which undergo lot of sufferings. Similar to the owner of such animals is the God Pasupathi who rules over all beings.

To the question, “What trick is there to acquire such knowledge?“. Jabali replied, “By wearing of the holy ash". He further told, “After taking the holy ash in hand by reciting the five Brahma mantras starting with ‘Sathyojatham’, and chanting “Agnirithi Basma (Hoy ash is fire)”, mix it with water by chanting, “Manasthoke” and then wear the holy ash in head, forehead and shoulders in sets of three lines chanting the three mantras “trayayusham”. Further wear these by chanting the three mantras starting with “Trayayusham” and the mantra “Tryambakam” is called Sambhava penance. Those with knowledge of Veda say that this has been told in all Vedas. For avoiding rebirth, the people with eternal wisdom, should adopt this.

Among the three lines, the first one is Garhapathya (the domestic fire), the letter Aa, the quality of Rajas, earth, Jeevathma (soul of beings), the power of creation, Rigveda, time of dawn and its God is Lord Brahma. The second line is Dakshinagni (Fire of the south), the letter Uu, the quality of Sathva, atmosphere, the soul inside the body, the power of desire, Yajurveda, the time of noon, and its God is Lord Vishnu. The third line is the Ahavaneeya agni (the fire of the Sun), the letter Ma, the quality of Thamas, the place of Gods, the Paramatma, the power of knowledge, Samaveda, the time of dusk and its God is Shiva. That individual, who wears holy ash, whether he is a Brahmachari or Sanyasi, gets rid of great as well as minor sins. He becomes fit to worship all gods; he becomes one who has taken bath in all holy waters and the one who has chanted all the Rudra mantras. He does not have rebirth. This Upanishad tells that, it is sworn that he will not have rebirth.

  8. Jabali Upanishad

    Translated by P. R. Ramachander

Om ! Let my limbs and speech, Prana, eyes, ears, vitality

And all the senses grow in strength.

Location: 45 km to the south of Chennai close to Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram District, Tamilnadu.

    How to Reach:

Nearest Railway Station: Singaperumal Koil Chennai-

    Chengalpattu Section.

Nearest Airport : Chennai -50 kms

    Nearest Seaport : Chennai - 60 kms

    Nearest N.H./S.H. : NH 4. (Bus Service 60 C.)

Best to drive in an airconditioned tourist car from Chennai to Singaperumal Koil starting early in the morning, and depending on the time spent there, one can return before lunch, back to the hotel, as very nearby there is another temple dedicated to Devanathaswamy.

Singaperumal Koil is is over 1,500 years old. It is also known as the Pataladri Temple, because here Narasimha is in his Ugra Roopa. According to "Brahmanda Puranam" the temple was surrounded by a big forest where Sage Jabali was doing penance praying to the Lord to appear before him. The legend has it that at the request of Sage Jabali, Narasimha, Singaperumal or the Lion God, manifested himself immediately after he packed off Hiranyakashyapu to the nether world.

The Lord even now gives darshan to the devotees in the same form with four hands, two of them holding Sudarsana and Panchajanya and the third in "Abaya Hastha" pose with the fourth pointing towards the earth. Found in sitting posture the Lord has three eyes, and wears the Salagrama and Sahasranama garlands. The Goddess here is known as Ahobilavalli.

What is so unique about this Lord in Singaperumal Koil? Here he proves to the Universe that both Hari and Hara is one and the same and not separate. Here the Lord has a Third Eye, like Rudramoorthy and every time the temple priests perform the Arathi or Deeparadhana, the Namam of Narasimhaswamy is lifted up for the devotees to have a darshan of the Third Eye.

In the Narasimha Avatara, Mahavishnu destroyed evil, and it is believed by both the Vaishnavaites and the Saivites that if one gets the darshan of the Third Eye, all misery in life would be removed.

It is a beautiful temple, on a hillock, with the fairly large idol carved out of a single red coloured boulder. The Pataladri Narasimha-swamy is almost 8 feet tall, and red faced.

Since the idol is part of a boulder and the hillock, if one needs to circumambulate one need to do the girivalam meaning go around the hillock. As in most other temples of Tamilnadu there is also a wish-fulfilling tree, the Mandapa and the Bali Peedam.

So, you have had a darshan of the Lion God, you have done the girivalam and now you start feeling hungry. Do not despair. The prasadam here is dosa, and podi, sold inside the temple premises. Have your fill, pay them the cost and both your mind and stomach is filled. One with food and the other with spiritualism.

According to the Vaishnava Sampradaya, there are about 13 other Sannidhis for Sri Narasimha Perumal in Tamilnadu besides

Singaperumal Koil. A number of them are part of the 108 Divya Desams or are in one of the Divya Desams.

Festivals: Brahmotsavam is on from June 2, beginning with "Angurarpanam" and "Dwajarohanam." .On June 5, the Lord, mounted on Garuda Vahanam, will be taken in a procession in the morning and on the Hanumantha Vahanam in the evening.

Sunday evening will find the deity going round on the elephant mount to the accompaniment of fireworks. The temple car will roll out in all its splendour the next morning and the festival will conclude with "Theerthavari" on June 11.

Special "Thirumanjanam" will be performed to the Moolavar idol in the morning on June 12 and the Lord will be taken in procession in golden "Tholukkiniyan" in the evening.

"Vidaayetri"will follow, held for three days from June 13.

Festivals are held almost every month in the temple, which is under the control of the HR and CE Department.

    We worship Shiva - The Three-Eyed (tryambakam) Lord (yajamahe);

Who is fragrant (sugandhim) and nourishes (pushti) and grows (vardhanam) all beings.

    As the ripened cucumber (urvarukamiva) is automatically liberated (bandhanaan) from its bondage from the creeper when it fully ripens;

May He liberate us (mokshiya) from death (mrityor), for the sake of immortality (maamritaat).

We pray to Lord Shiva whose eyes are the Sun, Moon and Fire

May He protect us from all disease, poverty and fear

And bless us with prosperity, longevity and good health.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is a prayer to Lord Shiva (the lord of destruction, penance and meditation) for help in overcoming "death". The seeker is more concerned with avoiding spiritual "death" rather than physical "death". The mantra is a request to Lord Shiva to lead us to the mountain of meditation, which is indeed Lord Shiva's abode. Legend has it that Lord Shiva appeared before his devotee Markandeya (who was destined to die at the age of sixteen) and stopped his aging process a few days before he was supposed to turn sixteen. Thus, death would never be able to claim him! Hence, this mantra is also referred to as the Markandeya mantra in classical hindu studies. The mantra should ideally be repeated 108 times, twice daily, at dawn and at dusk. It is particularly useful for meditation and yoga practice.

Spiritual Significance of the Shiva Mahamantra

Lord Shiva is referred to as tryambakam, the three-eyed one, because his third-eye has been "opened" by the powers of penance and meditation. The third eye is said to be located in the space between the eyebrows, and is "opened" when one experiences spiritual awakening. So, when we pray to Lord Shiva, we are in essence asking for his blessings and assistance in opening our third eye of spiritual knowledge. The natural consequence of this awakening is that we will be led towards spiritual liberation or moksha, and attain freedom from the cycles of death and rebirth. The goal of chanting this mantra is to spiritually "ripen" so that we can free ourselves from our bondage to all the material things that bind us!

    temple_p.jpg

    Sthala Puranam:

Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple in Poovarasankuppam is about 1200 years old. After Hiranya vadha Lord Narasimha whose rage didn’t subside was roaming all over the earth. On the Northern shore of the river South Pennai in South India also known as Dakhshin Pinnakini, the "Saptha Rishi' or Seven rishis prayed to the Lord to have his darshan. The spot were the Lord gave the darshan is called Poovarasankuppam. However, the intensity of the Lord was so much that the rishis couldn’t bear it. They prayed him to cool down and requested his darshan along with his consort Amirthavalli thayar who gracefully obliged. Here the Lord appeared with the Thayar on his lap.

While she partially faces the lord as if in a conversation with him, forwarding the bakthas prayers, she also bestows her blessings with her glance at the bhaktas who visit her temple. This act of the Goddess Lakshmi brought a soothing and tranquil effect on the Lord. To this day, it is only at this temple in the whole world does the Lord Lakshmi Narasimhar appear in such a pose.

There is another legend to this Kshetram. Once a king belonging to the Pallava dynasty embraced Jainism and started destroying Vishnu and Shiva temples. He imprisoned those who protested against him. The king imprisoned those who protested against him. One of the protesters happened to be a sage ‘Narahari’, who was sentenced to death by the king. Due to his action the king was cursed with ‘Brahma hathi dosham’. The curse started having its effect. The king was besieged with problems and difficulties Realizing his folly he repented for his sins and sought the blessings of the sage. On his way to the sage’s abode he rested for a while beneath a ‘poovarasan tree’. The Lord appeared in his dream and declared that he would be redeemed of his curse as the sage would come there to bless him. On waking up a leaf from the poovarasan tree dropped on the king, were he saw the image of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha. Overwhelmed with happiness the king knew no bounds when the sage appeared in person to bless him. The king was absolved of the curse. As per the wishes of the sage, the king constructed a temple for the Lord at Poovarasan Kuppam.

  15. Sri Nama Vaibhavam

Bhagavan Sriman Narayanan has got lots of Kalyana Gunams (Great and special - spiritual characters). He is away from all sorts of Doshams and no one can restrict Him (or) His blessings. Lots and lots of his Bhaktas are leading their life only because of His grace, blessings and the faith on Him.

More than the Bhagavan himself, His Thiru Nama (name) has got lots of speciality and greatness. In this Kali yugam, there are lots of ways to attain Him. But, the simplest way is through Nama Sangeerthanam (i.e.) by Chanting his Thiru Naamam.

Thirumangai Alwar in his Paasuram explains the greatness of the Name of Sriman Narayanan.

"Vaadinen Vaadi varundhinen ..." in this pasuram, in one line, he says -

"Naadinen Naadi Naan Kandu Kondein Naarayana Ennum Naamam".

In this verse, he says that by chanting the Narayana Naamam, we can attain whatever we wanted to attain. In this world, all of our sins will vanish only through Nama Sangeerthanam of his Thiru Naamams.

Lots of divine incidents have happened by chanting his Thiru Naamam.

    1. There was an Andhanan named "Ajamilan" who had a great bhakti towards the Perumal. He is well versed in all Dharmam and Shastras. Due to the bad environmental situation, he went in a wrong path and did all actions against the good. His son's name was "Narayana". He loved his son very much and used to have a small chat with him everyday evening and used to express his love by repeatedly calling his name. One day, when his lifetime came to an end, the Yama thoodhaas (Solders of Yaman) came there to take him away the life. As a daily practice he was playing with his son, while playing so, he called his son's name in a very huge sound and a result, Sriman Narayanan himself came there and protected Ajamilan. He actually didn't call Sri Vishnu but called his son whose name was "Narayana". So, this explains the greatness of him and his Nama Sangeerthanam.

    2. Yet another divine incident happened is during Sri Krishnavatharam, while (Panjali) Draupathi was treated badly in-midst of the Duriyodhanan’s palace, Sriman Narayanan helped her by giving lots of sarees and protected her. This is because she expressed the thiru Naamams of him like "Govinda, Krishna, Narayana" etc., and this explains us the greatness of Naama Sangeerthanam.

    3. It is not that Sriman Narayanan will extend his helping hands to humans but it is evident from the below mentioned incident also.

Once there lived an elephant named "Gajendran" and one day all of the elephants came to a small pond to have the water. While drinking the water from the pond, Gajendran’s (elephant) legs were caught by a crocodile. The Elephant could not get rid of the Crocodile and finally seeked the help of Sriman Narayanan. It expressed its position and thought of Sriman Narayanan and while thinking so it expressed the Naama - "Aadhi Moolamey". As soon as it expressed, Sriman Narayanan came on Garudan, killed the crocodile with his Chakkaram and rescued Gajendran.

The above incident clearly explains the greatness of Him and his Naama. There are lots and lots of incidents like these and the greatness of his Naama is unexplainable.

Even some of the incidents would have happened to the bhaktas reading as well. So, Bhaktas chant His divine names, whenever you get the time. There is no specific time or days for it to do so. Even if you could not go to the temple, you can get his complete blessings by chanting his Nama Sangeerthanam.

We speak so many unwanted issues which are useless. But, in thi kaliyugam, Nama Sangeerthanam and its Vaibhavam is the one among the way to get Mukthi. So, keep as a daily practice of chanting His Naama atleast for 10 times a day.

The great 7 Divya Mantrams :

    "Om Namo Venkatesaya"

    "Om Namo Narayanaya"

    "Om Namo Lakshmi Narayanaya"

    "Om Namo Sathya Narayanaya"

    "Om Namo Bhaghvathay Vasudevaya"

    "Om Kleem: Sri Krishnaya Namaha"

"Harey Rama Harey Rama - Rama Rama Harey Harey", "Harey Krishna Harey Krishna - Krishna Krishna Harey Harey"

There was a large forest area, close to this place is found and an aged couples named Muthabhai and Sanadevan led their life there. They had a beautiful child by named "Pundareegan" and he had a great love towards his parents.

    <table align="center" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td width="20%"><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td class="textsmall" align="center" bgcolor="#993333" nowrap="nowrap" width="96%">Sthalapuranam :</td> <td width="2%">

Since, Indiran killed an Asuran, Virutharasuran, he was given a sabham that he would become a brick / stone because of his sin and as a stone, he was thrown in front of the house of Pundaleegan.

Sri Krishnar wanted to test the love and affection of Pundareegan.

When Bhagavan came towards his house, Pundareegan was serving his parents. Sriman Narayanan asked him to come out of the hut, but Pundareegan, doesn't want to break the service that he is doing to his parents and asked Sri Krishnar to stand on the stone that is placed in front of their hut.

But, soon after, Sriman Narayanan's divine feet placed on the stone, Indiran got his original appearance and thanked both Sri Krishnar and Pundareegan. And after serving his parents, Pundareegan came out of the hut and worshipped the perumal. By fully convinced on the bhakti of him, Sri Krishnar stood in that place and as asked by Pundareegan, the perumal stood there as "Vittalan". Since, the perumal gave his seva for Pundareegan, the perumal is also called as "Pundareega Varadhan".

    Gorakkumbhar and Pandarinathan:

Once, in this place, there lived a person called "Gorakkumbhar". He had a great faith and bhakti towards Sri Pandarinathan. Like how, we breathe and release air, he expressed Vittalans thiru Naamam and chanted it. (He led his life by making pots).

To make pots, the clay, sand and water needs to be mixed together and they usually mix it using their feets. One day while he stamping for it, his small kid just happened to come near the place where he was stamping the clay. Because of over joy and the bhakti along with the clay, he accidentally stamped his small child also. And after a small time his wife returned and searched for the kid but could see only the cloth of it, which got mixed with the clay. And after then only, she realized that her child has been killed in the process of making the pots Gorakkumbhar and his wife cried and the Perumal as Sri Pandurangan came in front of the couples. He gave back the life of the child because of the great bhakti of Gorakkumbhar.

The Paintings and the expressions of this story can been seen in Pandaripuram temple.
