The essence is not neccessarily chanting in my humble understanding it is just developing devotion for Lord somehow/anyhow. and chanting is one of the nine processess 1)chanting 2)listening to pastimes of lord 3)devotion to guru 4)company of saints 5)complete absence of duplicity , hypocticy and simple attitude and honesty 6)not to see fault in anyone 7) avoiding bad company
