Guest guest
A friend sent me the below with the subject "Wanna Know?" The five stages I immediately thought of the five different bodily functions, and the eight was the Eight-fold Path. But with second thought... I wanna know too! Thank you and Love, Robert "I watch a teacher lecture on the sutras. His eloquence flows like running water. Expounding on the five stages and the eight categories, he explains them with unequaled cleverness. They proclaim themselves masters and others believe it. However, question them about the essence of meditation and they have no useful answer. Beware of such teachers." Ryokan
Guest guest
The 5 stages or five ranks, are degrees of enlightenment or of understanding of the relation between the real and the apparent. 1) the apparent within the real 2) the real within the apparent 3) emptiness of both real and apparent 4) mutual integration of reality and appearance 5) things just as they are love, andrew Skyeryder wrote: > > A friend sent me the below with the subject "Wanna Know?" Guest guest
Hi Andrew, Not trying to be a wise ass here. Just curious (wanna know). How does one make the differentiation between the five whoopees? Guest guest
Hi Victor, I really don't know. Traditionally in zen, the roshi makes the differentiation by how the students answers questions doesn't he. Seung Sahn puts these 5 stages on a circle as a way of illustrating, with 1 at 0degrees, 2 at 90, 3 at 180, 4 at 270, and 5 at 360. He says; "Zen is reaching 360. When you reach 360, all degrees on the circle disappear. The circle is just a teaching device.... Soen-sa then held up a book and a pencil and said, "this book and pencil, are they the same or different? at 0 they are different at 90, since all things are one, the book is the pencil, the pencil is the book at 180, all thinking is cut off, so there are no words and no speech. The answer is only (here he hit the table) at 270, there is perfect freedom, so a good answer is: the book is angry, the pencil laughs. Finally at 360 the truth is just like this. Spring comes, the grass grows by itself.... Everything is as it is. So the answer here is: the book is the book. the pencil is the pencil." andrew Victor Torrico wrote: > > Hi Andrew, > > Not trying to be a wise ass here. Just curious (wanna know).
