Guest guest
Hello friends.. a lengthy bit of sharing here, from someone who has been silently guided by much of what has shown up in this open space.... I have some news and observations to share. In the past month, I have been in deep reflection about a promotional opportunity which presented itself. As my current assignment is the most interesting I've ever had, it has been difficult to consider leaving. Yet these opportunities only present themselves every five years or so, and this has been the alleged goal for eighteen years with the San Francisco Public Library. So, I've done some very deep listening. I decided to throw my hat in the ring and was amongst the five chosen to go before an interview panel last Tuesday. On Friday I was informed that I was the first choice and offered the job. I then spent the afternoon in a kind of cold sweat and in consultation and reflection. At the end of the day, I decided to accept the position. Now I sit in the three week interval and already there is much to observe about the nature of consciousness. In the flicker of an eye on Friday afternoon, I witnessed in the most visceral way, the dynamics of projection and manifestation of reality. My current "reality" became frozen in "time", and as I observed my awareness recede from "it" as my known identity, it immediately became a dying "form". A new projected reality was beginning to loom as in-formation on the horizon. Amidst the emotional vortex of excitement, terror and loss, I have endeavored to remain in the Stream as witness to Self without an object of identity. My new position will be a departure of so much that I love about reference and spearheading/ teaching the use of new technologies. I will now be a middle manager, responsible for the largest and most comprehensive floor of our seven floor, city block library. I'll be supervising 25 people in the material flow for the Business, Science, Technology Departments, as well as the Art, Music and Sports Department. There are many detailed special collections to learn about in each and very demanding patrons (and Librarians) with high standards. Of course, I wonder.. am I up to this task? Yet something which is not fully conscious has been moving me to enter this challenge and I am trusting the intuition. I am moved to reframe my (criteria) doubts to "good enough to learn". A facet of the flow for me relates to what I've learned on these lists, as well as to the years of studying and listening to organizational development, the evolution of consciousness and to bringing awareness (and humanity) to the workplace. The challenge and opportunity is that of having some authority for praxis, as well as remaining in the stream of abiding. In other words, staying awake to what arises and not taking myself too seriously. If any of you have any advice or book recommendations for someone about to step into the challenge of remaining clear, while being the stress point (ombudsperson) between the demanding public, high standard Librarians and the good sized workforce which I'll need to lead towards implementation of the demands.. please know that I am an eager recipient. Although I am mostly a silent member here, I want you to know that the tonal notes of wisdom, authenticity and love which are struck amongst us on these lists, offers the resonance which keeps the symphony of my own notes most clear. Most recently, I tucked this note from Harsha, in my heart-pocket: > We need Ahimsa to address the conflicts inside ourselves. > Grateful for all of you.. Guest guest
Congratulations Christiana! Sounds like a great promotion. You will have 25 people working for you. You will be the boss! The people working for you will be lucky! Research shows that most of the stress at work comes from the boss! You will probably be the nicest boss they will ever have had. They will love you! Guest guest
Dearest Christiana -- Know that you are more than capable of discharging your new responsibilities, and I can't imagine anyone better prepared and suited for such a position! In a few weeks, 25 fortunate people are going to find out what it's like to work for and with someone whose personal modesty, attentiveness, and compassion are imho second to none. If you remember that a manager's primary job is simply to enable her nominal subordinates to do theirs as effectively and happily as available resources and current circumstances permit, I'm sure you'll do splendidly. Mazel tov, my friend, and bon voyage! Guest guest
Oh, my ... Thank you all for such kind words and encouragement. I feel embraced in the kindredness of new and old friends. It never ceases to amaze me how vibrantly real these cyber friendship can be. When (as of late) I find no words arising, and I become more of a lurker, your words echo within me like a symphony, played by my own internal orchestra. Here harmonics; there a tone poem; yonder a high note; and occasionally a dissonant tension. All a seamless piece. Yet, as Gene has written, on Jerry's list, it is vital that we offer back what we receive. Lately I've found little arising that hasn't already been said. Tonight I see that a facet of what I can offer is an open window through which you have shone your love. Tonight, I've had the interesting experience, which frequently happens when I write a post. So much comes tumbling out, and then I step back and ask myself questions such as.. of what you've just written.. "where was the essential vital message?" "what did you need to hear yourself say?" "what is it that seeks dialogue?" I see, that the fact of the new job is only background to what is most alive right now. What is interesting about what occured Friday, is this interstice of blankness which arose spontaneously. These words of mine were what wanted to be spoken: > In the flicker of an eye on Friday afternoon, I witnessed, in the most > visceral way, the dynamics of projection and manifestation of reality. > My current "reality" became frozen in "time", and as I observed my > awareness recede from "it" as my known identity, it immediately became > a dying "form". It simply has shown up as an interval withinwhich to observe. The stream of objects seems to have narrowed and like an hourglass, there also seems to be an opening to Space Stream. I appreciated what you wrote Colette (nice to hear from you). Particularly about emotional clearing and listening for what shows up as guidance. A great deal of emotions are showing up, and at this point, fortunately, they are not sticking. Guidance seems to be coming like a gently roaring river and it was through lines heard here (amongst other venues) that I was prompted to speak of gratitude. Greg.. funny about those Inner Directions quotes (which I have not yet seen). The last time they quoted me, it was a composite of "out of context" sentences taken from my reflections on being with Ram Dass. The reconfiguration seemed incoherent to me, and I had to laugh at my attachment to the original form. The next gathering looks interesting. I had a lot of fun last year, and plan to attend again. For anyone interested, here's the link: http://www.innerdirections.com/ Thanks again for the communion of community. Your story about the kid playing baseball incited me to write it down. Thank you. Christiana, No matter the book you read, don't forget the perspective you had on your job as an employee that loves her job. There is an "eye" that one may cultivate in action that integrates the perspective of the employee and the "ombudsperson" at the same time. I find it a nice opportunity to cultivate it, as any opportunity by the way Enjoy, > In the flicker of an eye on Friday afternoon, I witnessed, in the most > visceral way, the dynamics of projection and manifestation of reality. > My current "reality" became frozen in "time", and as I observed my > awareness recede from "it" as my known identity, it immediately became > a dying "form". Guest guest
Thank you for walking with me amidst this dialogue thread I realize that I am bringing my personal story here to a list which generally is not about praxis as we walk in the immediacy of our lives. If this feels beyond the tenor of the list, please know that I'm open to respecting the structure. Annette reminds of the multiplicity of agendas we each meet in others (on lists or in our lives). As I listen through that lens, these thoughts occur. I am not new to teaching, nor to organizing, and my life seems to have been dedicated to deep listening, and to refining translation of the multidimensional tracks of information which seem to course through this consciousness. In some ways (which seem a grace of being), it is quite ordinary for me to not only think systemically, but to actually become the system as body. My way of knowing seems to be intuitive, through pattern language, rhythm waves and geometric forms. I receive most clearly when the eye of the heart is as open as the heart of the mind. Thirty odd years of intensive study and practice in a host of disciplines have aided cognition.. or languaged what has been understood. What calls me forth always seems to be the stream metaphorically utilized by Teilhard de Chardin of our being cells in the body of God.. the body of Christ. I no longer hold this as specific image, but the metaphor has it's usefulness. So, when I sit with the notion of multiple "agendas", I also find that my deeper eye is opening to what lies beyond... to what within each of us is the unique tonal note of the larger symphonic body. When I can find that frequency, there is no separation and the next step appears. It is a process (a guidance) I trust implicitly. Eleven years ago, after the S.F. earthquake, I was one of the pattern makers for the reconstruction of our library, which was then, knee-deep in tumbled books, broken glass, asbestos, debris and danger. Books and crews were being deployed in six directions and the maps and workflow showed up like tensegrity structures for me to enter and be informed by. I learned that not everyone can do this (I used to assume that everyone else saw reality the same way). So in my new assignment, I will open and trust that it's rhythmic order will reveal itself in wholeness; and trust, as well, my passion for breaking it down into bitesized pieces. What will be far more of a challenge is my not becoming overwhelmed by the influx of information. This sensitive openness to both what appears to come towards me, as well as what comes through me, at times stresses the personal system. At times I feel that my personal container is the weak link to consciousness. And then... two or three years ago, I met all of you and the understanding which is the ground of these lists. I've always known this sense of wholeness (for lack of a better term), yet always before it was from within a sense of self identity. Through the graceful stream of induction and entrainment, and through specific mentoring with some of you, there have been numerous occurances of relative personal blankness and only Stream. I sense that in This is the answer to the alleged "weak link". As I now open to this next imperative, dancing on my generative screen, I feel charged with three rhythmic orders. 1) receiving the authentic pattern 2) holding compassionate, grateful and alive space for others to invest in the pattern 3) When contraction or resistance occurs, to use the charge in the crucible as fire to remind mind to relax and surrender it's belief in doership. These dialogues about volition-nonvolition; doer-no doer; duality-nonduality; act as profound koan when faced with what shows up appearing as a dual world invoking a doer to employ will. Thanks for listening to these ruminations. I enter here listening deeply to the stream of the world woven gracefully within the worldless stream. Your many offerings act as rudder. I appreciate your mention of mathematics, Antoine. I also trust this order, particularly as it shows up in patterns and forms. I also delightfully see through your aperspectival "eye". Thank you Mace for the book recommendation. I'll explore this. Love, Christiana

Scherkenbach The condensed version of the work of Dr. W. Edwards Deming A true Master of life and the work that comes with it. Mace I agree with Mace. Dr. Edwards Deming is well known in the management field and is considered the guru in quality control issues. Demings was extremely pro-employee and considered poor management to be at the root of most organizational problems. I saw an interview with Demings on PBS I think when he was in his 90s. Very blunt and feisty. Demings was an American whose message of quality control was lost on American managers in the 1950s. He was responsible for teaching the importance of quality control to Japanese corporations in the aftermath of world war II. He is revered in Japan for that. Once Japanese products gained reputation for high quality and consumers voted with their dollars, U.S. firms became more interested in Deming's message. Now Quality of product and services is considered a top priority in organizations. At Ford, they say quality is job 1. That is what we say here at a as well.
