Guest guest
>Long ago, in Hawaiian Islands, the villagers went to Kahunnas for wisdom and understanding - for guide-dance. "Show us *the* way" they said. "Cannot show *the* way, it is in your heart/mind", the Kahunnas replied. "Show us how to find it" they said. "No can do," replied the Kahunnas, "can only tell you how we found it." "Okay, how'd you do that" they asked. "Ala lokahi oaio ha'aha'a ahonui!" replied the Kahunnas. "Cool," replied the villagers, "we'll *try* that." "He he" replied the Kahunannas, "there is no *try*, either do or do not do". And the villagers repeated the mantra, the wise words of pointing of the Kahunnas - "Ala Lokahi Oaio Ha'aha'a Ahonui!" "Ala (watchful alertness) lokahi (working with unity) oaio (truthfulness, honesty) ha'aha'a (humility) ahonui (*patient perseverance*). They said it to the morning. They said it when greeting others and again when parting. They said it the last thing in the day. It helped to focus their attention, their listening, their intention. Then the white man brought his burden to the Hawaiian Islands. They already had Kahunnas to teach them, but the white man knew their *way* was better. "You are all sinners," the white man said, "and you are going to hell unless you let us save you. *We* will tell you what is so, what is right and wrong, who and what God is." "Ala-lokahi-oaio-ha'aha'a-ahonui" the islanders replied. "Mumbo jumbo, heresy, B.S.", the white man said. "We ain't got time to sit here and listen to that long sentence every time we meet. We've got churches to build, people to get clothed, and conversions to make. Got something to say, say it quick - we're in a hurry here." "Okay" the islanders replied, "a-l-o-h-a". "Well 'aloha' to you too, gimme that damn lei, and let's get back to fixing you", snapped the white man. He he. Funny thing that white man's burden.
