Guest guest
Maureen Benton [nannamo] Now, this has led me to a lot of confusion, because there are all these spiritual types saying that "pain is an illusion- go beyond your mind, and the pain will cease to be". Then there are those who say that the pain is real, a part of reality- so accept it. Well, I am totally > confused. Can't there be more than one way to a certain end? Ugh. ~Christina I am not sure what you are asking Christina. It seems to me sometimes that the pain and suffering we experience is difficult to deny and has little to do with spirituality. I am actually not sure what spirituality is either. As you can see, we are all pretty mixed up here and so you have a lot of company. When I hear tales of suffering, often tears come to me. And there is suffering in this world. I have seen it and I have also heard of it and I have experienced it in some ways as we all have and felt the helplessness of it. Buddha's first noble truth is that "There is suffering." Yesterday morning I severely sprained my back and was having a difficult time moving, sitting and standing up and walking. I rarely take medication. Luckily I had bought a lot extra strength Aspirin, Tylenol, and Bengay for my mother when she was visiting. It all came in very handy for me! Tonight I have to teach and I can only do it with the help of this medicine. Of course the way I will stand and walk in the class will look a bit funny but that's okay. It seems to make sense that when the body is not feeling well, one should take practical steps to make it feel better and use good judgment.
