DHEA warning

lt's interesting for me to see this discussion because l was right on

the verge of taking DHEA supplements a few months ago. Because l was

diagnosed with osteoporosis which resulted from significantly lowered

testosterone levels (apparently from kundalini's effect on my hormones), l

was about to use DHEA to boost the testosterone.

The research l did on the internet, while

admittedly not the most thorough, indicated that DHEA was safe at lower

dosages of 30 mg per day or less. A friend who l trust who operates a local

health food store -- he's an experienced nurse who's well versed in

conventional medicine -- assured me that it was safe at that dosage, after

selling the stuff for years.

Nevertheless, because l'm wary of taking any supplements, l had a repeat

test just to be sure and was happy to learn that my testosterone had returned

to normal (another indication, l hope, that my k process is moving along).

So, l don't know whether this stuff is safe or not -- it can take years

before one really knows -- l am relieved l don't have to worry about it.

Good information Jessica. I have heard that some people take 50mgs of DHEA a

day! From what you are saying, people in their 50s need no more than 4mgs a

day! Quite a difference. This hormonal stuff is sold at the local walmart

and kmart stores and I don't think is regulated by the FDA. We are living in

the wild wild west times for these types of supplements. I recall David

Bozzi who was on this list spoke favorably of DHEA and is quite

knowledgeable about nutrition issues.

Re: DHEA warning

Hi All,

Have not been able to keep up with reading all the posts but the discussion

on

DHEA caught my eye. About 10 years ago I met a scientist by the name of

Raymond

Peat, who had done extensive research on hormones and anti-aging and is

actually the 'forefather'

who discovered Natural Progesterone. I learned of Dhea from Ray and at times

use a solution of it dissovled in Vit. E combined with equal parts olive

oil,on some clients. I call it my 'magic potion' as it seems to miraculously

take away pain in many instances, arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, etc.and

at times, heal, but I also learned the following from Ray.

This is an excerpt from something he wrote on DHEA.

Young people produce about 12 - 15 milligrams of Dhea per day, and that

amount

decreases by about 2 mg. per day for every decade after the age of 30. This

is one of the reasons that young people eat more without getting fat, and

tolerate cold weather better: DHEA, like the thyroid hormone, increases our

heat production and ability to burn calories. At the age of 50, about 4 mg.

of DHEA per day will usually restore the level of DHEA in the blood, to a

youthful level. It is important to avoid taking more than is needed, since

most people (especially if deficient in progesterone, pregnenolone, or

thyroid) can turn the excess into estrogen or testosterone, and large

amounts of those sex hormones can disturb the function of the thymus gland

and the liver.

PEOPLE WHO HAVE TAKEN AN EXCESS OF DHEA HAVE BEEN FOUND TO HAVE ABNORMALLY

HIGH ESTROGEN LEVELS, AND THIS CAN CAUSE THE LIVER TO ENLARGE AND THE THYMUS

TO SHRINK.

One study has found that the only hormone abnormality in a group of

Alzheimers patients' brains was an excess of DHEA. In cell culture, DHEA can

cause changes in glial cells resembling those seen in the aging brain. These

observations suggest that DHEA should be used with caution. Supplements of

pregnenolone and thyroid seem to be the safest way to optimize DHEA

production.

Love,

~jess

Hi,

A few years ago I took DHEA for only a month to rebalance hormones and

was lucky that the health care practitioner was knowledgeable and

changed the herbs. I did end up with a very slight re-adjustment

needed in thyroid function.

I have been unable to keep up with all of the correspondence...Jan,

Harsha and Jerry I hope you are all feeling better soon. There is an

ayurvedic compound known as "gugull" that is absolutely excellent for

muscle, bone etc. problems caused by arthritis, accidents or

imbalances. I like the ayurvedic herbs as they are subtle, effective,

tested by years of history and approach the body with the body, mind

and energy spectrum. You can go to banyonbotanicals.com and order

right on line, the company is reputable, efficient and their prices

are very fair.

It can be argued that a supplement like DHEA is relatively harmless, as compared

to supplements containing ma huang - it has killed several people:

http://www.ephedrine-ephedra.com/

http://www.a-better-way.com/ephedra.html

Yet the stuff still is on sale, for instance at:

http://www.smartbodyz.com/ma-huang-ephedrine-ephedra-Text.htm

Not amazed at all :)
