SELECTIONS FROM THE SIKH SCRIPTURES (ADI GRANTH OR GURU GRANTH SAHIB)

_____________

This human form has come into your

possession;

It is your opportunity to realize the One

who sustains the universe.

All other efforts are in vain,

Therefore join the company of the holy [satsang],

And contemplate on the Name.

_____________

Uttering the Name of the Lord, I have become a part of His Being.

Since I met with the beneficent Saints, I am rid of my evil nature.

He, the Perfect Lord, fills all: He is the Lord of peace, compassionate

and holy.

And instructed in the mantram of the Saints, I am possessed of truth,

contentment, kindness, righteousness, and purity.

Says Nanak: "He who realizes the Lord in the mind, to him is revealed

the entire Mystery."

_____________

Of Himself, the Lord has united me with Himself.

O God, ever since I sought Thy refuge, all my sins have hastened away.

Shedding my ego, I have escaped to the refuge of the Sants [saints]:

Contemplating Thy Name, O Love, all the maladies of my body are dispelled.

Thou, O Lord savest in Thy mercy the utterly unwise and ignorant beings.

Says Nanak: "When one meets with the Sat Guru, then cease one's comings

and goings."

_____________

The Lord is our only Friend: nay, there is not another:

For, He pervades all space and inner space, the earth as well as the

seas.

Permeates He everything and He's the only beneficent Lord and Master

of all.

I seek the refuge of my Lord, the harbinger of peace.

Prays Nanak, "O God, on whomsoever is Thy mercy, he attains to Thy Name."

_____________

In the minds of the devotees there is bliss; they are attuned to the

Love of the True Word of the Shabad [the Sound Current, the Naam or Sound

of God]. Night and day, they constantly sing the Glories of the Immaculate

Lord; with intuitive ease, they are absorbed into the Naam, the Name

of the Lord. The Gurmukhs [disciples, devotees] hear the Ambrosial Bani

[Heavenly Music]; they recognize the Lord, the Supreme Soul in all. They

serve the One; they worship and adore the One. The Gurmukhs speak the

Unspoken Speech. The Gurmukhs serve their True Lord and Master, who comes

to dwell in the mind. They are forever attuned to the Love of the True

One, who bestows His Mercy and unites them with Himself. He Himself does,

and He Himself causes others to do; He wakes some from their sleep. He

Himself unites us in Union; Nanak is absorbed in the Shabad [sound Current].
