Guest guest
Many have complained about the lack of coverage in the US media of the earthquake and its aftermath. After the first couple days it's become a secondary news item here, covered almost in passing. lt occupied a small column on page 13 of this morning's paper in our town. lt wasn't until l watched NIGHTLINE last night that l saw the kind of coverage that made me feel the full impact. lt was only a half hour, but it was filled with revealing shots of total devestation, endless victims buried everywhere, heart wrenching interviews with survivors. Ted Koppel had many of the ABC crew members on camera. These were men and women who'd covered wars and famines all over the world, but who nevertheless appeared to be driven to their limits, saying that this was beyond anything they'd ever seen. l kept hearing " Overwhelming ...Overwhelming ... Overwhelming ..." One news reporter spoke movingly of an lndian man who kissed the feet of every rescue worker and who later explained, " They didn't have to come here. They don't even know us." He apologized for not being able to invite them into his home, which of course had been destroyed. Most of the reporters hadn't eaten for two days, but they spoke of feeling guilty because they at least had water, while the villagers didn't. l piled into bed sometime after midnite, and was unable to sleep. Finding myself in a nice cozy mattress, with a meal under my belt and a glass of water next to my bed, l too felt guilty. jerrysan rinpoche
