Guest guest
"Buddha said, "Why is it that people fight over this experience of the truth?" Truth is one. So to experience the truth is not important. The important point is how we digest the experience of the truth in our life. Emptiness is that the truth must be perfectly digested in our life. Truth is something always sustaining our life, giving religious security to us. This is the truth. If so, where is the truth? It is you. But, we practice not to leave the dregs of truth in our lives. This is pretty hard. There is a Zen story that is a very good example of this. A monk went to see a Zen teacher and said, "I am here without carrying anything at all." The teacher said, "Put it down." The monk said, "If I am here without carrying anything at all, how can I put it down?" Do you understahd this? "I am here without carrying anything at all" is already something that he carries (Along with all other endless strategies and stories to reach this seemingly distant Truth or God or Grace or whatever - J) But the monk did not understand, so he got angry. Finally the teacher said, "Please take it back to your home." This is wonderful but is is also very delicate. It is really a sickness but we don't realize that sickness; it is a very delicate sickness. We have this sickness always, it is called having the dregs. How can we completely leave these dregs? We don't believe we have it (especialy lurking in what we call our sincere efforts in spiritual study - J) because our stubbornness, our ego, always wants to get something in our hands. If we have dregs we feel good because they make sense. We are always shaking the little bit of dregs at the bottom of the bottle to find out how much benefit we get from spiritual practice and then we want to practice more." Whatever it is, just take it off. And then, what is left? Can we thoroughly learn the naked nature of a human being? If we try to do it we are always looking at ourselves in our own territory. It is sort of like playing hide and seek or putting knowledge into a hole. We feel good but on the other hand we find another hole. Always we do this. We take out old knowledge and put in new knowledge constantly. This is human life. it is fun. But it makes us exhausted and we cannot play hide-and-seek with ourselves. Then - we must throw away the universe. But, can we stand up in "Here I am, " in the completely naked nature of a human being? It is very difficult. Very naturally we want to have something outside of ourselves, scriptures, what the Buddha says, and so on. But strictly speaking, there is completly nothing. When there is completely nothing, how can we live? There is nothing here in human nature, even slightly, to leave any kind of dregs. We have to live that way.
