Also, do you know whether there is such a thing as 'transmission' from a teacher thru mere words, in a book ? jb. ======================= Here is a good answer to the above question taken from the Self Knowledge List. As the mind becomes purified, there emerges the possibility of "hearing" (sravana) and abiding (Niddidyasana / Mahamudra) in the Truth - the Singularity of the Self in the Heart (Hrdayam), such that words tat can not be understood intellectually have the automatic effect of "transmission." Once the words are "heard" the True Hearer emerges as the pulsation of the "I" (ongoing transmission outshining the mind) with each reading of non-dual texts, until one abides singly as That. (This is also my own experience.) See below from a talk by Swami Vivekananda. "Vivekananda Centre" <vivekananda Prophets.... Continuing with the talk by Swami Vivekananda The Indian atmosphere is full of stories of saintly persons having visions of God. Such doctrines form the basis of their religion; and all these ancient books and scriptures are the writings of persons who came into direct contact with spiritual facts. These books are not written for the intellect, nor can any reasoning understand them, because they were written by men who saw the things of which they wrote, and they can be understood only by men who have raised themselves to the same height. They say there is such a thing as realization even in this life, and it is open to everyone, and religion begins with the opening of this faculty, if I may call it so. ============================= Attachment: vcard [not shown]
