Hi Folks,

The Whitaker site visit is over, so my life is slowly becoming mine

again. I'm catching up on posts, and I just want to say in response to

this one:

Have I told you recently that I love you, Mike? Well, I do. (picture

Lily Tomlin's little girl character from Laugh-In saying

"ppppllllllfffft... and that's the truth...")

Love, Mark

But not all of us (I have a hard enough time trying to

I work a great deal with this population, and I do

believe that I would

disagree with you. True, their mental capacities are

generally (by

definition) limited, I have found many of these people

to be some

of the most "present" people that I have come across in

non-spiritual

circles.

Even the nonverbal people I work with are inquisitive,

lovable human

beings. In fact, I have often thought that some of

these people seem

to be almost pure expressions of Spirit, with little

overlay of ego.

They seem nonjudgmental and loving, and I can feel my

heart connect

with them no less strongly than with the

non-developmentally delayed

population that I work with (and often much stronger).

>There parents are going thru' hell. They can't do

True, many of these parents or caretakers have a

difficult time.

However, many (or even most) of the families that I

have worked with

seem to embrace the experience (and their child) with

love and

acceptance, rather than cursing the unfairness of the

world or

their situation.

In fact, I have often been awestruck by the joy and

tolerance that these

parents bring to the daunting task of being a caregiver

to this

population. I have found that *my mind* tells me that

they must be

having a difficult time, while the reality of the

situation is that the

family unit seems to use the whole experience as an

opportunity to

"open and soften" (to borrow a phrase from John

deRuiter).

I would suggest that many of these children are in need

of no healing

at all.

However, let me say that I think I do understand some

of your meaning.

But in my opinion, a person whom I think might be in

the kind of "hell"

that you describe is the spouse/caretaker of a person

with Alzheimer's

Disease. In my experience, these people have a much

more difficult

time than families caring for developmentally disabled

"children."

Or, if you want to get me going about unfairness (or

somebody possibly

repaying a "karmic debt") just bring up the whole

subject of child abuse.

The pain and fear that I see in some children's eyes

touches a vast sorrow

deep within me; one that is at times overwhelming.

However, I have no control over others. True, I can

advocate for and try

to help others (be it a person caring for their spouse

with Alzheimer's, a

child who has been abused, or an adult who has been the

abuser). But

other than actions like this, I believe that perhaps

the most powerful

thing that I can do personally for these situations is

to walk my own

spiritual path consciously and lovingly, trying to

radiate love,

acceptance, tolerance and healing into the world.

Perhaps you would be so kind as to share more about

this issue that

you brought up (and perhaps feel strongly about)?

Love,

Mike

Thanks, Mark. I love you and Eric too.

Mike (or isn't it my turn to be Harsha?)
