Guest guest
Hello, My brother is alcoholic and I am not. My father was. What I discovered recently is this. DHEA has a powerful effect on alocohol consumption. I had been interested for long in alcoholism, because alcohol is a precursor of sugar. Normaly, when I take two glasses of wine, my head is a merry go round. In spring and summer, I run alomost every day. Then I dont feel the urge to drink any alcohol. My body is refusing it. In winter, I cant run as well. Wet air and low temperature make it less attractive and less efficient. Then I can drink or feel the urge to drink for example a glass of wine or of strong alocohol. And it then does nothing to me. My body accepts it. I then sometimes feel an urge to take some. Now, in Canada, they give a lot of honey and pancakes to hardworker (wood cutters for example). Honey and sugar products at will. This is exactly to bypass the urge for alcohol. Now here is my experience with DHEA, related to alcohol. It is an excerpt from another post I did yesterday on another list : 'I began taking DHEA october 12th 2000. I was 51 and had difficulties running, though I did 6 miles a day, 3 times a week. One himalayan climber friend of mine, same age, had told me 'If I knew of any miracle pill to stay young, I'd take it'. I knew of it, through Internet, it was DHEA. I ordered it from the US (I am french). The first day I took two 50 mg pills (180 mg pills for $18 plus shipping). I went to restaurant and found alcohol (one glass of wine and my head is a merry-go-round) had no more effect on me. I checked that several times and decided, as a consequence, to avoid beverages, except when at restaurant with friends. I decided that after, in a mexican restaurant, I swallowed half a gallon of sangrilla, without noticing it. As a chess player on playsite.com, I noticed that, after 5 hours of continuous games, my opponents level was collapsing. Not mine. So, I was then winning on continuously, though till then we were a match. This is not me, it is DHEA. Last thing, a month ago, I just ran 20km (12 miles) under the rain with no difficulties and no drawbacks the aftermath. I cross cheked. I stopped taking DHEA for 3 days. Then I took two glasses of wine, and my head was... a merry-go-round. So, had I known DHEA sooner, I'd have taken it in my late thirties, when I first got difficulties in running (muscles torn). I have had only satisfaction with DHEA. The prostate cancer threat is only for those who have a predisposition. And it is not DHEA, it is the increase in prostatic liquid that makes the prostate work more. I also take pregnenolone, which is the DHEA precursor. I swap 3 days DHEA, one day pregnenonlone.' So I feel alcohol is linked to metabolic needs and peculiarities. This is an interesting field to study, methinks. Mainly is fast sugar (honey or melass) might be of some use. I'd be glad if anyone on this list had further insight on alcohol, sugar and DHEA links. Anecdotically, I am 215 pounds in winter with alocohol tolerance and 180 in spring and summer with no alcohol tolerance (my body just refuses it !). Guest guest
I'd be glad if anyone on this list had further insight on alcohol, sugar and DHEA links. May I ask what DHEA is??? Your post is very interesting... I grew up in an alcoholic family.. My father, and brother are, and yet the women in the family are not... The connection between sugar and alcohol is even more interesting.. Hypoglocemia runs in the family as well... My father, brother, and sister have it... Makes so much sense.... My father and brother crave sugar above and beyond normal standards, yet its bad for them... and they crave the drink also.... I never thought it would be a metabolic need {which is really not good for them physically} because too much sugar in a hypglocemic can cause them to go into deep sleep coma like sleep... I never wondered the why they might want it. Just some ramblings from someone who hasnt a clue about this subject. Lynette
Guest guest
Hello Jacques: Both of my parents were alcoholics as well as my brothers and many of my aunts, uncles and cousins. My sister seems to be the only family member that can "hold her liquor" and interestingly enough she does not have much of a taste for sugar. In her late teens she almost died from anorexia and her physical system seems to be different from the rest of us as a result of reducing her body weight to 56 lbs and going into a comatose state. I learned early on that if I went past a certain point with liquor I was unable to stop drinking and would experience unpleasant side effects....therefore, after getting drunk a couple of times in my early twenties I chose not to drink. However, I definitely have a "sugar thing" and am hypoglycemic. After I moved back north from FL my first winter of being stuck indoors without enough sun and exercise did lead me to an increased sugar intake (along with body weight), this winter I did better but still have had strong sugar cravings. I have always attributed the sugar cravings (which have been present since I was a very young child) as part of the genetic make up for alcoholism. I find your DHEA link interesting...when I was in my mid-forties I took DHEA to balance out my hormones and did experience increased energy. However, due to increased menstrual activity my health care practitioner took me off DHEA and told me at the time that DHEA needed to be used with caution and that it should not be an everyday part of one's herbal routine. Mark, your observation about medicating with drugs and alcohol for the deep spiritual craving rings so true. My three brothers are in their forties and fifties and are active drinkers....one brother is an agnostic by choice, the other two appear to be very angry at the God of their choice and all of them think I'm just crazy and my spiritual choices pretty much stupid...in their opinion their drinking has not rendered their life any less successful than mine :-). Hope you are feeling less depressed....I read somewhere that when one stops self-medicating all of those suppressed feelings must come up at some time or another....yogically, of course, they are just samskaras and eventually we move beyond them. Linda Hi Linda, Mark and everyone, Linda I found your comments on the emergence of suppressed feelings in alchoholics resonates. My dad was an alchoholic and he kept his life fairly tightly under control, all systems working, through his drinking years. When he went into recovery, all hell broke loose. It took a couple of years, but he became profoundly depressed, suicidal, and eventually quite mentally ill, with delusions and hallucinations. He did eventually recover from that deep dark period. I have a number of friends who are recovering alcoholics with similar stories. I have often thought about the parallels between addiction recovery and the spiritual life, especially since I began to experience kundalini. It's like being on a fast track for clearing, and the rate at which things come up to get tossed out, is in both cases, pretty overwhelming at times. It seems from the posts of the last days we can have our own ACOA group within the satsangh. It's kind of surprising the number of us with these addictions within our families or our own experience. When I got over it, my doctor decided I must not have had the real thing, but rather pseudo-hypoglycemia, caused by rapid emptying of the stonmach caused by stress. But isn't that what doctors always say when you recover? ) And also, I had a friend with severe hypoglycemia, so I learned a lot about it. >My father and brother crave sugar above and beyond normal standards, yet >its bad for them... and they crave the drink also.... With diabetes you sometimes have not enough insulin (which handles sugar)... with hypoglycemia you sometimes have too much insulin. So diabetes can be controlled by taking insulin... hypoglycemia can be controlled only by diet. The symptoms are the same, because in both cases what happens is big swings in blood sugar... very high, very low, etc. You might feel depressed or scatter-brained or not be able to make up your mind about anything... an extreme reaction can look like being drunk or can result in passing out cold. My friend had a problem at my house one night... she said, "Quick! Give me something sweet to eat!" I handed her a piece of cake, and she shoved the whole thing in her mouth. Then she felt better... but she said, "Now I have to have some protein to counteract the sugar." So I cook her a big hamburger. In other words, you have to use food, and sugar works faster. (Drinking orange juice is a way to get fruit sugar fast.) But then it has to be balanced with protein. Don't forget that sugar is brain food... we all need some sugar of some kind. But with hypoglycemia it's the balance that's so important. Many small meals rather than a few big ones, and keeping any sugar balanced with protein. Guest guest
Hi, An interesting thing about hypoglycemia is that while it is the opposite of diabetes the sugar lows feel the same and it will often, if left untreated, wind up as diabetes. One thing that I find helpful in addition to the small meals is licorice root.....I use liquid drops for a quick balance.
