This language is not hindered by the limitations of >internet word games nor enhanced by the physical presence of a person. It is >understood through and beyond all limitations. It is a meeting far beyond >what we think possible or impossible. However, the computer screen and the faceless communication that the internet is has a strong tendency to "grey out" contact. Sure, the medium generally lowers the shame threshold for various behaviors that would not have been tolerated in "real life", which can be good in some circumstances opening a person up and revealing what's beneath the social masks but the greying out of contact on the whole makes internet contact brief, on most instances superficial and in some instances considerably erratic in comparison with how the person would have presented him/herself in a real life meeting and in rare instances, downright violent. So theoretically, the stripping down of communication which the internet medium does, can lead to a deeper contact compared with a meeting in real life and a sampling of personality, but then again, maybe not. The wish to see a face and hear a voice behind the text usually appears at some point in internet communication and many site builders have sought methods for providing this, data aptly named "avatars". Maybe the best aspect of internet communication that is offers ppl the chance to choose when and how often to have contact. It's easier to turn off the computer than turning a dinner invitation down. Maybe that aspect makes internet communication less colored by a sense of duty and social obligation than real life communication is and more voluntary (in the social sense)? There is also a difference in the time in which replies are delivered over the net as compared with a real life conversation which gives internet communication a different flavor than other communication methods. Text based communication per e-mail isn't the same as text based comm. per relay chat and that isn't the same as a talking on the phone. It may be easier to discuss complex matters in a medium where you have time and opportunity to avoid jumbling words and forgetting information (since you can go and look things up). Lastly, the difference between internet and real life which may be important is that most ppl who are shy and dislike meeting new ppl, dislike speaking in groups etc etc have an easier time speaking up on a text based medium, so you see input from ppl who otherwise would belong to the silent majority due to personal fears. Again, a result of the lowered social inhibitions which the internet provides. Thus ends my treatise on internet communication vs. real life communication. ;P Love, Amanda. Who needs Cupid?
