9. What is the benefit derived by the sage from the sacred books (Srutis)?

The sage who is the embodiment of the truths

mentioned in the scriptures has no use for them.

When the whole country is flooded, the reservoir becomes superfluous. So,

to the illumined seer, the Vedas are all superfluous.

Exactly so -- and also the

Upanishads and the Gita

itself! One must admire a

work that forthrightly

states the limits of its

own utility -- it reminds

me of "Mission Impossible":

"This scripture will self-

destruct upon direct

realization of that to

which it points!"

That's why its called Vedanta.
