The famous translation is the one by Richard Wilhelm, which Jung got deeply involved with. The modern translation by Thomas Cleary is less mystical and more down to earth. The preceding chapters are all about "turning the light around" which means turning the mind (spirit) inward to source (the lair of energy). In the translator's notes for this verse, it says; "According to Liu I-ming,"White snow symbolises the energy of the primordial unity; this is like the metaphor of 'white light arising in the empty room.'" That this white snow flies in "midsummer" means that it is manifested in the "fire" of consciousness. The "sun blazing" symbolizes positive energy, "water" stands for real knowledge hidden within, and "midnight" represents profound stillness. Therefore "the sun blazing in the water at midnight" means the emergence of the positive energy of real knowledge from the depths of quietude. -The receptive- is the -I Ching- symbol for mother earth." > > And you'll suddenly see > > White snow flying in midsummer, > > The sun blazing in the water at midnight. > > Going along harmoniously, > > You roam in the heavens > > Then return to absorb > > The virtues of -the receptive-." > > > > from > > -The Secret of the Golden Flower- Chapter viii Cleary trans. >
