the beloved’s applause

“Nothing helps you mature beyond neediness….”

-David Deida

the piano concerto is over

the conductor’s ivory baton

rigidly stands at attention holding

the orchestra holding the audience

each riveted in silence and stillness

realizing that form is emptiness

on the artist’s bench

slumped over the ivories

is someone who is everyone

his fingers still caressing the keyboard

reluctant to release the keys of the lost chord

the dark overtones drifting brightly beyond

lofting through the rafters into nothingness

everyone who is anyone is

waiting for the final judgment

the baton slowly arises

the maestro arising like an eagle

spreads his winging arms to heaven

the instruments breath in the silence

the concert master’s lips curl and smile

the applause is absolutely deafening

but on the artist’s bench

head bowed in supplication

a saint or an artist, an artist or a saint

fingers and palms prayerfully drawn together

reluctant to release his fervent heart’s prayer

the infinite desire to hear within the thunder

the crashing feet of the standing ovation

just one someone who is everyone

the sweet nothing of all artists and saints

among the symphony of clapping hands

there is only one sound of music worth hearing

the sound of the beloved’s one hand clapping
