Guest guest
"The world of human affairs has been run mostly on beliefs. Most fundamental among our beliefs is the view that we are lacking something in our lives and must 'get' fulfillment. Time and again this 'getting' has been tied up with a thousand other beliefs and modes of behavior to which we must conform. These beliefs, prejudices, partial confrontations, and 'objective facts' avoid the main existential issues of being in the world. In being run this way, the world has been run poorly; it has been run down. How much dignity, inner harmony, or integration with nature has been achieved? How much interpersonal communication has there really been? How many people can see life as a great gift - as the performance of a profoundly celebratory drama? History continually witnesses both dissatisfaction with the world and attempted transcendences of it. Many attempts to transcend it, as well as 'improve' the world and the lot of mankind, have been institutionalized on a large scale. But these attempts have all been based upon beliefs, rather than on an investigation concerning the nature of true value, virtue and balance. Beliefs...uncertainty...doubts...protective entrenchment against doubts...fractions...enforcement and bribes to stay in line...threats...guilt...fear...resultant dishonesty with others and with oneself...subtle schizophrenia...franticness...hope and fear together- tremendous pressure pervading everything- habituation so we don't even notice it. In such circumstances who can directly and sensitively face what life offers?"
