Guest guest
Hi All, On the Opra show this afternoon I heard a wonderful story from a beautiful woman. She said she used to be a model, and she was always thinking about improving her beautiful face... getting better photos, whiter teeth, smoother skin... Then one day she saw her small nephew about to fall down a stairway. She flung herself at him and fell down the stairs, cradling him in her arms. She landed on her face... when she looked in a mirror, she saw her face looked terrible and her upper lip was almost hanging loose. Now she's recovered and looks the same as always, but she isn't the same. She said that experience somehow freed her, and she began to express everything that had been hidden before... creativity and spirituality, etc. She said she realized that everything that was really her was _behind_ the face. She thinks that for her that experience was necessary. She had to smash the mask to find out what she really was. What a clear example of seeing past the persona or ego image! Of course, for most of us the ego image isn't actually a beautiful face... the image of what we are may be quite different. And it isn't always necessary to smash the mask... it's enough to just see it for what it is. Love, Dharma

The seeing eyes swallow the bodies and faces of others until just everything remains and the sensation is one of being headless. I believe Greg has mentioned that Dr. Douglas Harding has written extensively on being "headless" . Love, A.
Guest guest
That's right Amanda, His most famous book (now out of print) is ON HAVING NO HEAD. Many of the seeing techniques and exercises can be seen on their website, www.headless.org. I use things like these in the last part of my 6-month Advaita Vedanta class. Thanks for the link, I'll keep that. I found Harding's writings to be puzzling at first but he does present them with a lot of humor and wit. I think it's good to see something like his writings which do not carry spiritual ovetones or the common trappings of non dual teachings. A.
