Then I suppose it will have to be fruit, unless fruit is seen to be self-conscious too (not impossible). In that case, perhaps starving to death would be preferable? But tell that to a lion who brings down a goat for dinner. If animals are self-conscious, then the lion has no excuse for eating meat either <loud laugh>.
