Hi Tim,

You mention "Maybe if a series of cartoons were made with pigs, cows and

chickens (large, 'soulful' eyes and exaggerated cuteness), it would

generate enough sentimental feelings among children (and some adults) so

meat eating never would be taken up in the first place :-)."

I don't think so, or at least when I was in Sapporo, Japan, I didn't see

evidence for this hypothesis (not that I had my eyes where I could see

such evidence...) I saw many cartoons of "cute critters" with large

soulful eyes, often as part of the window decoration (advertisement?) on

restaurants which served chicken, etc. There seems to be a huge

enthusiasm for such cartoon images, but I found them more likely to be

linked to a food establishment than not. (often associated with soft

drinks and other such "western cultural" items.) I'd love to know more

about the meaning the Japanese associate with them. I didn't encounter

anyone with whom I could discuss such a thing. Maybe I'll get a chance

to go back and learn more someday.

Love, Mark

ps on the other hand, the movie "Babe" may well have been the last straw

that drove my friend Mary into vegetarianism, so there may be something

in your idea. (I dunno if Mary is here on the list now or not, but if

you are, Mary, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.)
