This story might be illustrative: When having to be transported by ambulance to the hospital last Sunday, the police kept the majority of my papers like ID card and driver's licence - although i was the injured victim. And it's virtually impossible to get them back - hence no other option than reporting them "lost" at the local police, getting a written statement for that and then, getting new cards - something even the Belgian ambassador resorted to...
