Guest guest
Tomorrow, August 11th, is Krishna Janmashtami. ! Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya ! This is Lord Krisna's birthday; one of the greatest of all Hindu holy days. Lord Krishna was born in 3227 bce; as the 8th Avatar He came to Earth for three reasons: - to destroy wickedness; - to aid Arjuna at the battle of Kurukshetra; - to create the model for all Bhakti Yogins. An Avatar is an incarnation (or the descent) of God; Their very presence allows us to ascend towards God. The birth & life of an Avatar has a beneficial influence on humanity, by aiding us in our spiritual unfoldment. We should think of Avatars as pathways towards Self Realization. By walking among us, They reveal our divine nature. By example, They help us to rise above the petty tyranny of passion & egoism. Though Lord Krishna had a human body, He was fully divine in the Flesh. He never died. A great secret among yogis, sages & devotees is that His means of departure was through Yoga Maya. Incarnations of God appear for special reasons under special circumstances. For example .. whenever there is much unrighteousness; whenever confusion & disorder set in on account of unrighteousness & baffle the well-ordered progress of mankind; whenever the balance of human society is upset by selfish, ruthless & cruel beings; whenever irreligion & unrighteousness prevail; whenever the foundations of social organisations are undermined .. the great Incarnation of God appears in order to re-establish righteousness & to restore peace. Lord Krishna is an ocean of bliss. His divine flute captures the hearts & minds of all who hear its wondrous sound. Symbolically, He carries the lotus & discus, the flag & thunderbolt, the goad & barley seed, the rainbow & triangle, the water-pot & crescent, the sky & fish, & the blessed sun wheel (swastika). Aside from being a god & Arjuna's charioteer, He was an excellent statesman, a master musician, a gifted cow-herder, a lover of women, a miraculous healer, a killer of demons, a teacher of the Supreme Yoga, & skilled in everything He touched. A twenty-four hour fast is observed on this day, which is broken at midnight. Temples & homes are decorated with flowers, kirtans are sung, bells rung, conchs blown & Sanskrit hymns are recited in praise of Lord Krishna. On this Holy Day, we should prepare sweetmeats & clear butter as offerings to Lord Krishna. At home, you can: - do japa on "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya"; - read the Bhagavad Gita; - fast on Krishna's birthday; - spend this day in satsang; - greet all you meet with, "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya!"; - chant Krishna's name 108 times - offer flowers & fire to His great presence. If you do not own a Gita, or cannot read it all, meditate on these select passages: - "Hear from Me the most secret knowledge coupled with the essential experience and its component parts. - "May you realise by My Grace, the knowledge of Myself and what form, qualities and actions I am endowed with. - "Before creation I alone existed. There was nothing, neither existence nor non-existence. I am that which remains after dissolution. - "Understand that to be Maya or illusion which is devoid of any purpose, which is not to be found in the Self and which is unreal like light and darkness. - "As the primary elements are amalgamated, with one another and also separate from one another at the same time, so I pervade the whole universe and am also separate from it. - "The aspirant should, by the method of positive and negative, know that thing which exists always and everywhere. - "Experience this truth through the highest superconscious state so that you will not be disturbed even by illusory objects". - "In days of yore, the Lord, born of Devaki, brought up in the house of Yasoda, killed the wicked Putana of illusive form and lifted the Govardhana hill, killed Kamsa and the sons of the Kuru race, and protected the sons of Kunti. Thus is recited the essence of the ancient Bhagavat Purana consisting of the nectarine stories of the deeds of Lord Krishna". May the blessings of Lord Krishna and Sri Radha be upon you all! We should think of Avatars as pathways Namaste Hamsa, There is no 'God' to incarnate!!! God is the sum total of the jivas, like a forest is the sum total of the trees. The universe is like a clock it runs itself once wound up. An avatar, well we are all avatars, is a person who took rebirth to help. The concept of bhodisattva is the same thing, holding on to a thought to help. A jivanmukti is totally realised, having no ego thought at all. Hence coud be thought of as superior to an avatar!!. This takes nothing from Sri Krishna of course, accept he was no more god incarnated than we are!!!.........ONS.......Tony.

Guest guest
Hi Hamsayogini, Thanks for this wonderful, inspiring post! Happy Birthday Krishna! As a form of Ishwara, Krishna is alive in hearts across the world. But according to the Mahabharata and the Agni Purana, Krishna as Avatar died from the arrow of a hunter - about 36 years after the war he helped Arjuna to fight in. Here is from a web page that has some info on Krishna and the Kali Yuga. OM! --Greg (http://www.hssworld.org/all/yugaadi/yugabda2.html) "Sunrise at Lanka (Ujjain), on Sunday 20 February 3102 B.C. of the Julian calendar is reckoned as the first yuga_di of Kaliyuga. The year of the battle of Bharatas constitutes a watershed in Indian history and is also a reference point for determining the dawn of Kaliyuga. This year (equivalent to 3102 BCE of the Julian calendar) also marks the end of the Krishna Avatar (incarnation of Lord Krishna), as a hunter's arrow pierced Krishna's mortal body. Since Krishna died 36 years after the great war, the war is dated to 3138 BCE. "Indian tradition posits an eclipse of the Sun at the start of the kaliyuga epoch. And from (http://www.indiadivine.com/agni-purana2-y.htm) It was Krishna who had used the Pandavas as a tool to rid the world of evil kings and establish the good ones. Realising that the Yadavas were also evil, Krishna also ensured that the Yadavas would be destroyed. He then gave up his life at the place of pilgrimage that is known as Prabhasa. After Krishna died, the city of Dvarka was swallowed up by the sea. This was the story of the eighth avatara of Vishnu.
