Song of Amergin: translated by Lady Augusta Gregory

This particular poem is perhaps the most famous piece of Druid poetry.

It was uttered by the Druid

Amergin when he first set foot on Ireland. I quote it here because, in

a magical way, it is the answer you

would get if you asked a Druid, "what is a Druid?"

Following that are some intertesting passages from Hindu scripture

that follow the same poetic pattern, in

which the god Krishna is speaking.

I am the wind on the sea

I am the wave of the sea

I am the bull of seven battles

I am the eagle on the rock

I am a flash from the sun

I am the most beautiful of plants

I am a strong wild boar

I am a salmon in the water

I am a lake in the plain

I am the word of knowledge

I am the head of the spear in battle

I am the God that puts fire in the head

Who spreads light in the gathering on the hills?

Who can tell the ages of the moon?

Who can tell the place where the sun rests?

Correlate: Bhagavad-Gita 7:8-12

I am the taste in the waters, O Son of Kunti.

I am the light in the moon and sun.

I am the syllable Aum in all the Vedas.

I am the sound in ether and manhood in men.

I am the pure fragrance in earth and brightness in fire.

I am the life in all existances and the austerity in ascetics.

Know Me, O Partha, to be the eternal seed of all existances.

I am the intelligence of the intelligent.

I am the spleandour of the splendid.

I am the strength of the strong, devoid of desire and passion.

In beings I am the desire which is not contrary to dharma, O Lord of

the Bharatas.

And whatever states of being there may be, be they harmonious,

passionate, slothful-- know they are all

from Me alone.

I am not in them, they are in Me.

At the beginning of the world, I was.

Before there was an ocean, I was.

Before springs burst forth from the land, I was.

Before the mountains settled, before the hills were born, I was.

When there was neither lake nor land, I was.

When the heavens were not yet in their place, I was.

Before the ocean formed the horizon, before the ocean was yet

firm in its bed, before the earth's foundation was stabilized, I was.

There I was laughing and playing, as the world was formed.

Dharma a chara,

Amergin was written in Gaelic and then translated, why Graves would

want to use a translation, I don't know. There is much speculation

about oghans and pre oghams, greek letters etc.

Anyway I liked your stab at it.
