Correction to the Jain Prayer

In the list of "Prayers for Peace" sent around yesterday, the last line of

the Jain prayer for peace was missing. I received a note from Sri Steve of

the Advaitin list who with his characteristic generosity researched the

matter and found the last line of the prayer and wrote me a note with the

correction. I thank him for that. Mahavir, the 24th Jain prophet, was a

contemporary of Buddha and preached the doctrine of Ahimsa (Non-violence).

The last 4 lines of the Jain prayer reflect that message.

"A weapon howsoever powerful it may be,

can always be superseded by a superior one;

but no weapon can, however,

be superior to non-violence and love."

These prayers can help us reflect on the essential message of the sages of

universal love, compassion, and nonviolence in times of difficulty. Because

many people are grieving in their own ways, these prayers may offer some

consolation with their message of peace for the human spirit. David Hodges

was kind enough to put the "Prayers for Peace" on the HS website and we will

leave them there on a permanent basis.

David, if we can add the last line of the Jain prayer to the HS website at

your convenience, it would be appreciated. No rush. Thank you.

Love to all

Harsha

Harsha,

I found the corrected version of the Jainist prayer. Thanks again,

so much, for sharing the compilation. I have shared it, literally,

with hundreds of people, and they in turn are sharing it with

others.

With affection,

Steve

Jainist Prayer for peace

Peace and Universal Love is the essence

of the Gospel preached by all the

Enlightened Ones.

The Lord has preached that equanimity

is the Dharma.

Forgive do I creatures all,

and let all creatures forgive me.

Unto all have I amity, and unto none enmity.

Know that violence is the root cause of

all miseries in the world.

Violence, in fact, is the knot of bondage.

"Do not injure any living being."

This is the eternal, perennial, and unalterable

way of spiritual life.

A weapon howsoever powerful it may be,

can always be superseded by a superior one;

but no weapon can, however,

be superior to non-violence and love.
