Sri Nisargadatta whose core teaching is identical to that of the Sage of

Arunachala Ramana Maharshi has also put it simply: The Self is nothing else

but the knowledge that 'you are'. Meditate on that principle by which you

know 'you are' and on account of which you experience the world. Meditate on

this knowledge 'you are', which is the consciousness, and abide therein."

Thank you Harsha, beautifully put... :))

Disregarding the Sage:

Hi Lynette, Harsha , and everybody:

Words can go so far. How far? Nisargadatta's quote above speaks

loudly to my own experience.

Sages must believe their words do some good or they would not speak

at all. I know that once I already know something the words that

previously were meant to make me understand that went unobserved and

later looked like a light to guide me. Perhaps they did guide me to

the later understanding or perhaps it was something else. Empirical

knowledge can be a stepping stone for revelation in concepts but the

state of knowledge rather than ignorance is greater than those two.

How then can words lead to that real knowledge he spoke of?

"The state of grace is the speech that rises in the heart of silence"

"One Syllable shines forever in the heart the Self.

Who is there anywhere who can write it down?"

Sri Ramana

Have you ever messed around with insects, trying to get them to go

where you want maybe out of the house? Have you ever thrown down a

crumb for an ant directly in its path only to have it turn away and

go in a different direction? I always laugh when they do this.

Stupid Ant. Then I get determined. This ant is going to be fed

whether it likes it or not. I put up barriers on either side of it

to channel it to the crumb.

This channeling to me is like the words of the sages. If one

believes there are sages.

More often than not I have seen the ant crawl right over barriers

channeling it.

They don't have my overview of their situation.

If the words are false and the sages wrong then I am guilty of hope.

If I have faith and vigilance I have an advantage over ants.

One more note. Too often I think we confound words with

communication. If I mean something different by a word or context

than my listener then we don't communicate.

I believe the object of words should always be to be in rapport with

others. I also believe this is the object of art as it is also

communication.

Peace

Bob G.
