Daily Words of the Buddha

September 16, 2001

If one, longing for sensual pleasure, achieves it, yes,

he's enraptured at heart. The mortal gets what he wants.

But if for that person -longing, desiring- the pleasures diminish,

he's shattered, as if shot with an arrow.

Sutta Nipata IV, 1

Once i came across a comment on that - from the perspective

of those, having all sensual pleasures at a command and being bored

to death, because it just repeats....

The thought of dying and then having to experience another time

of "utter boredom", was a powerful incentive then to become

a follower of the Buddha... What "better" example than that of

a former prince, leading a life as a wandering monk and "radiating"

beyond words.

And it shows that even in a peaceful, wealthy society, suffering

remains. By whatever name " " goes, *knowing* it is an absolute

requirement for "peace" irrespective of conditions.

And what would be a requirement to make the proper decisions

in times of distress?
