Upon being asked why the devotees often get choked up in Bhagavan's

presence, Sri Ramana explained that such tears are natural and not from any

kind of pain but Bhakti. It is well known that Ramana Maharshi himself often

experienced such things even when reading touching passages from stories.

In "Day by Day", Bhagavan recalls an incident of when he was around 22 and

living in Virupakshi cave. Sri Ramana was sitting on a stone near the cave

when a boy of 8-10 years came to see him. Upon not being able to bear the

sight of such a young and bright person take the hard life of penance, the

boy started sobbing and cried for a long time. At another time, another

young boy seeing Bhagavan's condition asked him, "Why are you here [in the

jungle], all alone like this?"

Bhagavan: I had some trouble at home and so have come away like this.

Boy: How about your food?

Bhagavan: I eat if anyone gives me something to eat.

Boy: I have a good master. I shall take you to him. First, you have to

volunteer your services for free. If he approves of your work, he will give

you three pies a day and gradually he will increase it to six pies and so

on.

Bhagavan: Yes, please do so.

Bhagavan added, "There was no doubt that the boy was very much concerned

over what he considered my sad plight and that he was moved with great and

genuine pity."
