Autumn Canticle

"I have entered deep waters,

and the flood sweeps over me"

-Psalm 69

oh my beloved

the darkness of my sin

are but autumn when i stand

in your presence

would that i could be

all my relentless hopes and fears

a brittle leaf on a falling tree

burning in your sweet wind

will you not come

the splendor cradling the stars

the very breath of holiness itself

scorch me with nighttime jasmine

my beloved, oh

as liquid amber leaves falling

wind burnishing rusty leaves

rust into ashes into living waters

sweet rain falling from heaven

tears of compassion descending

carry me deeper that i might kneel

a holy child cradled in a womb of fire

carry me deeper that i might become

prayers of compassion ascending

fragrant earth blossoming snow lilies

living waters into incense into aether

pure aether polishing tarnished divinity

refiner's gold into invisible thread as

you beloved, just you, oh

scorch me with nighttime jasmine

the very breath of god is yours

you who hide behind starlight

i will come to you

burning with holy desire

a naked tree washed with gloom

as a golden leaf burnt into darkness

awaiting rebirth i surrender all i am to you

in your presence

as fugitive twilight, as fleeting dawn

your tender darkness absolves my sin

oh my beloved

rusty waters becoming dusty clouds

in you alone i am my beloved

among all gods and goddesses

in you alone i am a noble lord

for you alone are the most high

for alone are the one,

beloved,

alone in you i am

dusty clouds becoming living waters

autumn's reign of holy wind and fire
