On a recent trip to China, I bought a sable jade bowl in

Suzhou. Outwardly it is a simple black bowl about the

dimensions of a medium sized fruit dish. Its sides flare

outward. It has no designs upon its surface, either within or

without. It is quite the most unpretentious looking little pot

you ever saw. Yet hold it up to a light source and a miracle

happens.

Within it's substance can be seen a three-dimensional jade

forest, beyond the words of art to describe. Spring sunlight

slants downward to dapple upturned deciduous leaves, as in

a lovely woodland glade. There are overhanging verdant

bowers. Emerald foliage stipples from one branch to

another in lush perspective. Shaded grottoes of olive depth

and scintillating upraised leafy, greens of every translucent

tint, unveiled by the light, which seems to come from a

source of it's own. An arboreal canopy of radiant light

looms above a sea of green. Upon the ground, secreted, and

unexpected, appears moss covered sea caves rising within

mysterious rocks arrayed within dark water. It is without

doubt, a revelry of pure magic.

It is a subjective world within a deceptively objective world.

Above all, the light is what enthrals and fascinates the eye.

I keep it in a cabinet under a light. I think I should not

though. It also seems quite natural in itself, being

un-illuminated by an external source. All its power is

within. It is a constant reminder to me that the Light is most

easily seen in simple things, and that God is the indwelling

of all objects that we give our devotion to. There is a hidden

treasure in the world, that only the heart can reveal.

What is born from Love

must be forever free of defilement.

Its lambency plays upon every eye,

and opens every soul.

It extends our reality

and manifests everywhere.

love
