Guest guest
Got an answer. From Jim McCulloch, University of Texas. Here is his reply: This is an invention of Christian missionaries, and has no basis in historic Buddhist scriptures. The last words of the Buddha, according to the Mahaparanirvana Sutra, were "All compounded things are transient. Strive on (for awakening) with diligence." You will find slight variations in translation, but the above is the basic idea. "Compounded things" means, essentially, everything. --Jim McCulloch
