Got an answer. From Jim McCulloch, University of Texas. Here is his reply:

 

This is an invention of Christian missionaries, and has no basis in

historic Buddhist scriptures. The last words of the Buddha, according to

the Mahaparanirvana Sutra, were "All compounded things are transient.

Strive on (for awakening) with diligence."

 

You will find slight variations in translation, but the above is the basic

idea. "Compounded things" means, essentially, everything.
