Last Aug., I was at Satsang at Swami Satchidananda's ashram when he relayed an interesting story about how he came to his Guru, Swami Sivananda. He had spent a few years with Sri Aurabindo, and had then been directed to go study with Ramana. He was there for about 2 years when Ramana's cancer had so infected his arm that it needed amputation. Ramana was so detached from identifing himself with his body that it freaked Swami Satchidananda out. He told how Ramana would look at his tortured arm and say "Oh poor arm, how you suffer so" with the kind of love and compassion that you would direct at a baby who had stubbed their toe. This transcendant detached attitude was very shocking and un-understandable to Satchidananda at that stage of his spiritual life. So, for the only time in his life,he asked for and received permission to leave Ramana to go study elsewhere. He then met Swami Sivananda, and lived happily ever after. But to this day, he has great reverance for Ramana.
