"Courier New";color:black"> In Vedic times, mother goddess was worshipped as Usha and "Courier New";color:black">Aranyani in Rgveda and as Sri Gayathri in Yajurveda and Durga in "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">other Vedas and in Upanishads as Uma, Hymavathi, Narasimhi and "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Tripura. The epic Ramayana of Valmiki has said to be embedded in it "Courier New";color:black">Sri Gayathri of twenty-four letters in the twenty-four thousand "Courier New";color:black">verses of the epic. In Puranas, Samhitas, Agamas and Tantras, she is "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">worshipped as Sri Mahakali, Sri Mahatripurasundari and as Sri "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Rajarajeshwari. Thus from the prehistoric times (2000 BC) upto date "Courier New";color:black">there is an unbroken tradition of the Godhead being worshipped as "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Mother. Even today it is rare to find a Hindu home where she is not "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">worshipped as Mother Sri Durga, Lakshmi, Kali, Saraswathi or at least "Courier New";color:black">as Gramadevatha i.e a small village deity. In this long line of "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Shakti worship, two aspects of the goddess can be clearly discerned. "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">1. The fierce form of the deity that is dreaded. "Courier New";color:black">2. The benign aspect of her love and kindness. "Courier New";color:black">These two broad aspects are common in the concept of God in other "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">religions also. The first one is more primitive and is an active an "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">violent form – Rajasic or Tamasic personification of Shakti. Fear is "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">the predominant emotion of the Sadhaka in worshipping this aspect, "Courier New";color:black">fear of natural calamities, ill-health, death, enemies, poverty and "Courier New";color:black">even ignorance. Even her form is imagined with many heads and hands "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">each carrying deadly weapons like sword and mace, riding on wild "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">animals like tiger, lion and even corpse. She usually resides in wild "Courier New";color:black">places, lonely forests, hilltops and cremation grounds. "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black"> She is generally represented with a gesture of allaying fear – "Courier New";color:black">Abhayamudra. She is offered sacrifices of living things such as "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">fowls, goats, buffaloes and probably even human beings. Wine is "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">offered in many cases. She is frequently worshipped to gain limited "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">personal objectives, sometimes even of an evil nature. It is this "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">fierce aspect of Shakti which Arjuna sees at the end of Vishwaroopa "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Darshana and gets frightened. "Courier New";color:black"> The second form of Shakti is the Satvic one, a latter and "Courier New";color:black">sublimer concept that is the product of Upanishadic thought. Here the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">sadhaka, through greater knowledge and practice largely sheds the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">fear of the deity and loves her as his own mother. She is generally "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">imagined as seated on a lotus and surrounded by beautiful lakes and "Courier New";color:black">gardens. She is worshipped with the object of reaching and realizing "Courier New";color:black">higher and higher levels of consciousness and knowledge. "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black"> But in the various forms of Murtis that are being worshipped "Courier New";color:black">as Shakti these two aspects are intermingled to a more or less degree "Courier New";color:black">as can be gathered from the form of Sri Gayathri extolled by the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Vedas. She is contemplated as having five heads, three eyes, and also "Courier New";color:black">having in her hands a mace, a goad, a skull, two lotuses and "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Abhayamudra. "Courier New";color:black"> The sadhaka, as he advances in his discipline, as his "Courier New";color:black">practice becomes Satvic and sublimer, finds himself drawn "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">irresistibly drawn towards the second or the Satvic form. This is the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">form in which Parashakti is worshipped in Dakshinachara or "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Samayachara. "Courier New";color:black"> Each one of the Tantras is an elaborate compendium or a "Courier New";color:black">system of philosophy, worship, ritual and a code of conduct suited "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">and prescribed to various individuals and groups, of various "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">capacities. "Courier New";color:black"> During the Puranic period, Buddhism and Jainism were living "Courier New";color:black">religions. Naturally, there was mutual enrichment between the various "Courier New";color:black">systems of discipline. "Courier New";color:black"> The Tantras and Agamas are held in the same high esteem as "Courier New";color:black">the Vedas and Upanishads. Upanishads include texts like Brhvaca, "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Nrisimhatapini, Kena, Brhadaranyaka, Tripuaratapini, Tripura, "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Bhaavana, Srichakra and other Upanishads. There are Samhitas like Sri "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Dakshinamurthy Samhita and Bhuvaneshwari Samhita which are almost of "Courier New";color:black">the same status as Vedas in authority. There are Tantras like "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Mahanirvana and Vamakeshwara extolling the cult of Sakti. There are "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">some Tantras like RudraYamala which are said to be older even than "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Vedas. It may be mentioned here that there is an impression among the "Courier New";color:black">common people that Tantra is some form of black magic associated with "Courier New";color:black">immoral practices with sex and drink, condemned by Vedas. There "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">appears to be some ground for such an impression. The Vamachara or "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">the leftist path is probably an echo of the primitive ritual with "Courier New";color:black">which the terrible aspect of the mother goddess was worshipped in pre- "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">historic times. Latterly it found sanction in some Tantras, which are "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">banned by Vedas. In Vamachara, Rishi is Bhairava and Bhairava- "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Bhairavi are the deities. The worship of the Shakti component of the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Shiva-Shakti one Parabrahman, si stressed more here. Vamachara "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">generally uses the Panchamakaras. The origin of these can be traced "Courier New";color:black">to the evolution of the Saakta path itself. The fierce tribal goddess "Courier New";color:black">of Saakta cult was offered meat and toddy or whatever the worshipper "Courier New";color:black">wanted to eat and drink such as fish and wine. However, the capacity "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">of these ingredients to coarsen the intellectual faculties especially "Courier New";color:black">in spiritual pursuit was soon discovered. But if one cannot escape "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">the lure of them they were permitted as an article of worship by "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">certain classes of people who were used to nothing but this. This is "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">probably how this has crept into Saakta mode of worship. "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black"> Some like Vimalanda and others justify Vamachara on the "Courier New";color:black">ground that it seeks to sublimate the grosser nature of man through "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">satiation of senses. But this is a very strange argument. Because "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">human nature grosser and grosser as the senses are satisfied further "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">and further. There are some who extol Vamachara as having been "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">practiced by great ones like Sri Ramakrishna. This argument is "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">actually against Vamachara. It is only highly evolved souls like "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">those mentioned above that can withstand its temptations and "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">pitfalls. It is not for ordinary Sadhakas and the evolved souls do "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">not need it. "Courier New";color:black"> Whatever might be the origin of this Vamachara, it was "Courier New";color:black">evolved as a part of Sadhana for certain classes of Hindus and has a "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">place in their spiritual growth, at any rate in the beginning. The "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Tantras themselves give adequate warning about the pitfalls and "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">prescribe for sadhakas with PashuBhava. "Courier New";color:black"> On an examination of the historical evolution of the Tantras, "Courier New";color:black">sex as an article of worship seems to have been introduced for the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">first time in the Guhyasamaja Tantra of Buddhistic origin. In this "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Tantra, in its 18 th chapter mention was made of Prajnabhisheka or "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">initiation of a disciple with a woman. There it was said that the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Guru takes the hand of a beautiful woman agrreable to the disciple "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">and after citing the Tathagatas as witnesses, places it in the hand "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">of the disciple. Thereafter placing his own and on the head of the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">disciple, he will say ," Since Buddhahood is impossible of ttainment "Courier New";color:black">to you, you should accept this Shakti ". Thus it looks as though this "Courier New";color:black">was the result of a reaction to the high moral and monastic ideals of "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Buddhism and Hinduism. From the name of Tantra itself, it is evident "Courier New";color:black">that it advocated secret societies where this cult was practiced. "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">This is the beginning of what is known as Vajrayana Buddhism. "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Incidentally these secret societies where in the name of religion "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">orgies of sex, drink and gluttony were practiced, were mainly held to "Courier New";color:black">be responsible in bringing Buddhism into contempt amongst the Hindus "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">and driving it away from the land of its birth. "Courier New";color:black"> The credit goes to Sri Bhagavatpada Shankaracharya for "Courier New";color:black">rescuing these various schools of Hindu religious worship, more "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">especially the Saakta path, form these odious practices and "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">establishing it in its "Courier New";color:black">pristine Vedantic purity as Samayamata or Dakshinachara. This "Courier New";color:black">Samayachara is the main ritual in the monastic institutions "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">established by Sri Shankara and prescribed to Hindus since his time. "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">The discipline of Samayamata is called Swatantra Tantra by Acharya "Courier New";color:black">in Saundaryalahari. This samayamata is a system integrating within "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">itself the Yogas of Mantra, Laya, Bhakti,Karma and ultimately the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">desired Jnana. This path harnesses besides our intellect, other "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">faculties of mind such as faith and emotion in our efforts. The "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Samayachara condemns Vamachara and the worship of Shakti is according "Courier New";color:black">to sacred texts called Shubagama Panchaka. Here the Rishi is "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Dakshinamurthy; Kameshwara-Kameshwari are the deities. The sadhaka "Courier New";color:black">has to completely identify himself with Srividya-Srimata-Guru and "Courier New";color:black">Srichakra.the "Courier New";color:black">puja prescribed here is called Antaryaga. "Courier New";color:black"> Depending on the Samskara, capacity, tradition etc of the "Courier New";color:black">sadhaka, Tantra Shastra prescribes six ways of worship of the same "Courier New";color:black">Parabrahman. These are Shaiva, Vaishnava, Koumara, Ganapatya, Soura "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">and Shaakta. The most expansive of these is undoubtedly Shaakta. The "Courier New";color:black">great Parabrahman is here known as Lalitha, Paraa or Ahamta etc. the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">main Upaasya's or deities worshipped are : Kali, Tara, Shodashi, "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Bhuvaneshwari, Chinnamasta, Bhairavi, Bagalamukhi, Matangi and Kamala "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">with their respective Shiva's or Mithuna's being Mahakala, "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Akshobhya, Panchavaktra Kameshwara, Tryambaka, Kabandha, "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Dakshinamurthy, Maharudra, Matanga and Sadashiva or Mahavishnu. There is not a single God or Goddess that is not "Courier New";color:black">worshipped in the Srichakra as a part of Srividya. Srividya includes "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Pratimaa puja, Linga pooja, Yantra pooja, Saligrama puja, Nyasa, "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Kundalini yoga, Mudra paddhati, Shodasha Samskara, Homa, Bali, "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Kamakala Dhyana and what not ? "Courier New";color:black"> Upasana is possible in three ways, namely : "Courier New";color:black">1. Kaadi vidya – Kali krama or Samayamata or Kundalini yoga. Saadi Vidya – Tara krama or Samavarodhini vidya or Mishra marga. "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">The first one is what is also called Dakshinachara. Here Shiva is "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">called Samaya and Shankari as Samayaa. This is the path of pure "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">consciousness leading to sure success in spiritual staircase. the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">best and the knowledgeable, who are free form most Malas or the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">impurities except for the most subtle one and also at the same time "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">belonging to the first three Varnas among the four Varnas (which are "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">divided according to Varnashrama Dharma by Manu) are eligible for "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">this path which is unanimously declared to be supreme not only by "Courier New";color:black">Samaya Tantras and Agamas but also by VamaShaakha Tantras. The "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">worship here is in the Daharakasha and only internal. For those "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">sadhakas who are not capable of complete internal worship in the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">initial stages may begin with worship in the Bahyakasha as laid out "Courier New";color:black">in the Kalpasutras. Though Saundaryalahari has been interpreted to be "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">the source Tantra for both Vama and Dakshina Tantric concepts by "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">venerable commentators, there is no doubt that Acharya has clearly "Courier New";color:black">explained Samayachara practice to be adopted rather than its "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">counterpart. With every verse dealing with Vaama concepts, there is "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">also a hidden warning about its various pitfalls, which are much "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">greater than the benefits it offers, if at all any. Saundaryalahari "Courier New";color:black">is surely inspired by Subhagodaya and Srividyaratnasutras of Sri "Courier New";color:black">Srimadgoudapaadaacharya, Paramaguru of Srimadacharya which are "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">classic texts of Samayamata. "Courier New";color:black"> Dakshinachara aims at reaching beyond the three Gunas "Courier New";color:black">beginning with Satwa. Vaama is Tamasic where as Mishra is Rajasic. "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Though most commentators on Saundaryalahari have criticized "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Lakshmidharacharya for degrading Vamachara, he is correct in most of "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">the places if not all. As he says, most of the Vama Tantras deal only "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">with Mooladhara Chakra and awakening Kundalini. Panchamakara practice "Courier New";color:black">is literal in Uttarakaulas whereas symbolic substitutes are used by "Courier New";color:black">the Purva Kaulas. Purva kaulas actually have some concept of Mithuna "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">ob Bhairavi and Bhairava but in the pose of Pradhana and Apradhana. "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">However, the Uttarakaulas do not recognize Shiva tatwa at all. Then "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">where comes the question of the great Shiva-Shakti communion in the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Sahasrara? Here only Shakti is said to be Upadana Karana and sadhana "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">involves just the waking up of kundalini with Yoni puja, Chakra puja "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">etc. the siddhi obtained in this path is called Kshana mukti. This "Courier New";color:black">is because just awakening Kundalini is said to be Moksha here. Ther "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">are various sects under Vamachara. Kapalikas follow Chandrajnana, "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Hridbheda, Bhairavashtaka, Panchamrita, Sarvajnanottara, "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Mahakalimata, Arunesha, Medinisha, Vikuntakeshava and other Tantras. "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Vamacharis, in the strict sense follow Vamajushta, Mahadeva, Veena, "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Kalasana, Sambhoga Yakhsini, Kubjika and other Tantras. Kshapanikas "Courier New";color:black">and Digambaras follow Purava-Daksha-Uttara-niruttara-vimala- "Courier New";color:black">vimalottara-devimata and other Tantras. These Tantras expound some "Courier New";color:black">practices which are obscene, degenerating and are condemned by the "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Vedas. "Courier New";color:black">Saadi Vidya, also called Mishra Vidya, mainly relies on concepts of "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Samayamata, though some beneficial practices and some deities are "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">borrowed here from Haadi krama. The Tantra followed here is mainly "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Chandrakalashtaka. "Courier New";color:black"> As far as Srividya is concerned, the three traditions are "Courier New";color:black">Dakshinamurthy – Hayagriva – Anandabhairava. These respectively "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">relate to Kai – Hadi – Sadi karmas. Dattatreya sampradaya actually is "Courier New";color:black">a mixture of these three main sampradayas and as such the Tantras do "Courier New";color:black">not recognize it as a primary tradition of Srividya. These "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Sampradayas are not contradictory to each other but instead are "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">complimentary. The main differences are in the construction of "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">Srichakra, Guru Mandala, Patra Sthapana in Srikrama etc. Srividya is "Courier New";color:black"> "Courier New";color:black">the combination or essence of sixty-crore mantras.
