High Protein intake and depression?

Some time ago, Eric had raised the question of the link between Kundalini

awakened people and depression. Recently, in my continuing research on

optimal nutrition, I came across information that a diet high in protein

(animal protein?) and low in carbohydrates can produce or amplify symptoms

of depression.

I don't know whether that is credible information or a generalizable truth

for everyone but is worth considering since high protein diets like Atkins

have become popular. Yogic traditions have emphasized the relationship of

food to the mind for thousands of years. Hippocrates is believed to have

said, "Let food be your medicine".

Evidently, there is a lot of information available on the web on how foods

affect mental states and it may be helpful for some to check that out.

Love to all

Atkins is a con-man in that he has taken a sliver of truth

and then deep-fried it to make it appealing for profit.

Regarding nutrition, the simple truth is that carbs are the biggest

contributing factor to excess fat. So Atkins is correct to suggest

that people limit carbs. The wrong part of Atkin's sermon is to

suggest one can go out and eat lots of protein, as much as one

wants from high fat animals sources. 2 problems here: 1 - animal

protein is very high qualitiy protein but too much of it is

pro-inflammatory. It causes all sorts of burdens on the immune-system

and leads to immune related diseases (cancer, asthma, arthritis)

Problem 2: The high saturated fat itself.

Too much meat could cause depression from the high intake

of that kind of protein, (which disrupts hormone balance)

and secondly from excess fat

which contributes to depression.

Whey protein and fish are a different animal

and enhance emotional well-being.

(each for different reasons) Fish for it's fat, whey for

it's protein.

Key is moderation with regard to meat. The average American

meat intake amount however is far outside the bounds of moderate.

I personally eat about 5 skinless chicken breasts/year.

Scientifically speaking I am a vegetarian.

Fish & whey is extremely healthy and decreases depression, heart

disease, inflammation, arthritis, cancer and so on...

Since you seem so interested Harsha, I recommend

"The New Nutrition" - by Dr. Michael Colgan

to add to your study.

It's a fun book to read. You would like it.
