Guest guest
That is a wonderful contribution, John. Your remarks really moved us away from the standard and too often repeated retorts... Guest guest
Hi All, I have enjoyed lurking on the thread about Mystical Experience and the many comments about it. However... I note that in all the discussion there is only an implied meaning of the term "mystical" and it is never clarified as to what it means. The thoughts expressed about "mystical experience" are just that thougts and words and not addressing the content create dualities about it. A "mystical experience" is just that - an experience of a state of consciousness. Such an experience does not point to an "identity" or even an "ego" unless the one having had such an experience than adds additional value to the description such as "I am superior because I had this experience". Then duality appears and all the arguments become relevant. The "experience" is just an "experience" not distinguished one way or another. As the dictionary defines it, it is an experience of union with spiritual truth or ultimate reality as Allness or the Oneness of All, beyond dualities. Perhaps a better turn of phrase would be "mystical realization". By analogy, the sun is shining whether the earth receives its direct rays or the clouds prevent them reaching the earth. There are two states: sun shining and being received, and sun shining and being blocked. They are not opposed to one another just different. A "mystical realization" about this would be the realization that the sun is shining whether it is a cloudy or a clear day. If someone has such a realization and says, "Wow! I just realized that the sun is always shining whether I see it or not." That is sharing. If someone has such a realization and says, "Wow! I just had a mystical revelation about the sun, and my realization is so powerful that it makes me superior to everyone who has not had that realization. And I will not share my secret realization with anyone unless they can prove to me that they have also had the same realization." That is ego sharing and is a problem in which self is hiding from Self. The "unitive experience" has been lost in the affirmation of a self separated from others; it is no longer about the truth about the sun's shining and has become about someone's "I" and a very limited one at that, IMHO. Guest guest
Exactly! Exactly! I think my other comments suggest the same conclusion...but I like your analogy better. Apologies for any out of sequence replies, but I am an out of sequence person lately, and feel stifled by the linear requirement of reading and replying to Email in an orderly fashion--and besides even if I surrendered to that habit, AOL in their Wisdom will jumble them, in any event.
