Guest guest
I have only just joined this group; and I shall refreain from posting unless and until I have something worthwhile to say. Right now, I have a very grat deal to learn, despite having lived a lot longer than I expected to. may I take this opportunity of extending my loving greetings to Robert and Maizie (who know me from membership of another group; and who recommended this group to me). I shall be reading as many posts as possible: and I shall endeavor, of course, to open my mind to expressions of truth cast in different cultural contexts than my own. Guest guest
Thank you, Valerie, for your quick response. There was a lady whose email address was a real jaw-cracker, and who was also called Valerie. I can tell only by guessing; but I think she was far from well. Forgive me if I ask two things of you after peeping into the 'most recent messages' - a) were you, or are you about to leave this list ? b) Have you suffered from bi-polar disorder ? ( Normally, I'd never dream of asking such a question ; but it happens that my wife has had a real roller-coaster of a life because of it, and I have had perforce to learn all I can about the condition in order to be as supportive as possible). Alaska sounds like Shangri-La ! Guess I've always held a very stereotyped image of it ! Bashalam dalahah ! John...............Silent Companion............. P.S. The nervousness is inculcated very largely by the Oriental terms and concepts associated, seemingly, with this list. Since I'm 'not at home' with most of them, it makes me a real rookie; and it should guarantee peace and minimum intrusiveness for other members !! ---- John Schofield wrote: I 'm sorry your name doesn't ring a bell! As a new boy on this list, I'm feeling rather like somebody who may have gatecrashed the wrong party. but your welcome words, as also those of Valerie, to whose post I've just responded, are extremely helpful. Guest guest
My compliments and very best wishes to you both, Chris and Anne. As you may have noted from Eric's response to my own (tentative!) post, I live in S. Wales; and I absolutely detest it when folks label me with the old 'welcome-in-the-hillsides' nonsense ! Good to note the interest in both the remarkable Eckhart Tolle and 'A Course in Miracles' . My favorite passage in that work, which you so aptly describe as 'awesome', is 'The Forgotten Song' which, for brevity's sake, I would characterize here as representing intimations of immortality at the very least. To the best of my understanding, the work as a whole is an example of channeling. With respectful love and blessings ! John...............Silent Companion.......... ---- Dear Eric My self (Chris) and partner Anne are living in Scotland. Motherwell to be precise though Anne is Irish and I from Inverness in the Highlands. Finding that more people in Scotland are atuning into the message from those who know they are Self Realised. We have been to a Bernie Prior retreat in Wales saw Eckhart Tolle in London and both attended a K.F.S.R. (Kundalin for Self-realisation) put on by Desmond Winfield intensive in Lechlade but for the main part there is littleSatsang as yet available in Scotland unless you belong to a specific group. satsang is invaluable to us, some very beautiful yet simple advanced teaching which resonates within. Reading Course of Miracles just now which is awesome. Eckhart Toll is my main inspiration, Bernie Prior is also excellent. Love Ramana too. While the ancient highway back to God is being opened I feel we have a new vehicle taking us on the journey and while not wanting to throw the baby out with the bath water, I tend to "now" look to teachers of our age and of our culture. "God" meets our needs now. Regards Chris /join All paths go somewhere. No path goes nowhere. Guest guest
Lest I forget, Eric, I must say that I was brought up in the tradition of the free Churches - though not Bible-bashing ! I developed an interest in the established Church and eventually got hooked on Rome ! More Catholic than the Pope for quite some time. Such is the fervor of the convert ! Interspersed with all this was wide, eclectic reading which, together with the influence of a beneficent and outstandingly spiritual Sanitarium Doctor who had experienced nde before that term was in general use ( I had a parallel 'career' as a TB patient !); and who had a profound effect upon my later development, if I may dare call it that. I was enabled to travel widely, despite undertaking a somewhat colorless and necessarily short career as a High School teacher - including several years in Canada. Guest guest
Thank you, Eric, for being so willing to respond to what, in most contexts, would be regarded as a very impertinent question. I am sure that, on a list which enables folks to open their hearts and minds to innumerable facets of the Great Discovery ( or Re-Discovery), such questions do not have to be regarded in the same light. My wife has been subject to the roller-coaster of highs and lows which the condition referred to brings about; so I don't have to be a genius to pick up oftentimes tiny clues. Please be assured that I have enormous respect for your courage in adversity, having seen its manifestations in the form of the crippling depression suffered by my wife and many others. She, too, shows admirable determination, despite the manner in which the condition creeps up insidiously, or otherwise overwhelms dramatically. I belong to an anonymous support group of people who, in the main, have to resort to writing, snail-mail fashion, to a journal which, for many of them, isa veritable life-line. Behind the demonstrable sadness, clinical in nature - one might even say 'a dark night of the soul' - there are so many talents and accomplishments for which the sufferers cannot enjoy their just reward. I have received a number of posts already; and I now feel more attuned than I did when I d ! What an interesting family background ! I took my wife to one of those antiques fairs some time ago and got talking with a guy who was selling various interesting trinkets. It turned out that he hailed from Dublin, and was Jewish. I learned that day, to my considerable surprise, that there were lots of Jewish people residing in the fair city. Just goes to sho how blinkered one's vision can be. Never having visited the place, my 'snap' associations consisted of stereotypes of Catholicism and an inflow of impressions from James Joyce's work. How much more, then, do we need to clear our minds of excess baggage where deeply ingrained attitudes and prejudices hold sway ! John........... Silent Companion............ ---- Thanks for relating some of your personal journey John, I can see that you have a sense of humour about where the path sometimes seems to leads us! Oh yes, I have had bouts of depression in the past. Although I did not labelthem as such and never sort professional help. I would always put it downto my celtic blood, or my artistic temperament. The last one was a biggy though. So I had to face up to the fact that there were some issues that I had beenfailing to address in my life.I am learning to recognise and observe the symptoms before they overwhelmme now. And my spiritual outlook has (I hope), created the necessary balancein my emotional make-up to bring understanding and conscious healing tomyself before I get too deep into such negative states. The above of course is an over simplification of the whole process, but I thoughtI would just confirm what you thought might be the case.By the way, my mother was a Roman Catholic and my biological father an IrishJew. A rich mix I am sure you will agree!loveeric Lest I forget, Eric, I must say that I was brought up in the tradition of the free Churches - though not Bible-bashing ! Guest guest
Hi again John, just been out for a short walk, nice evening here. No, you are at the right party. Harsha's place is very comfy, feel free to walk around and get to know people. Like you, I can suffer from that famous British reticence, but I shall not be a British citizen for very much longer, so must learn to lighten up a bit myself. Yes, I know Mazie. A beautiful human being. I used to be a member of nde list (still am I think), but fell ill and had a long recovery and sort of forgot to return. Anyway, What are your main spiritual influences? Don't worry about all the yoga terms that fly around here, its all a learning experience, and besides we are all in the same playpen. Glad you like my poetry, quite a few poets here also. Poetry is a path all on its own. Pleased to get to know you. love eric Oh and by the way, Hi to you Valerie, don't think we said that yet! I did not have anything to add to the bipolar discussion so kept quiet. I have had phases of depression though, not anymore thank God. Alaska sounds beautiful. Hi there, Eric ! Thank you so very much for writing me ! As a new boy on this list, I'm feeling rather like somebody who may have gatecrashed the wrong party. but your welcome words, as also those of Valerie, to whose post I've just responded, are extremely helpful. I have applied to join this list because of Maizie Lane's presence on it - a dear, dear soul who has lit up the nde list with so much of her zest for life. So ! I don't know whether we have other Limeys here at this time. (I have the effrontery to call myself a Limey, despite having been born and raised in South Wales. My father, born in Yorkshire, had the misfortune to find himself in this neck of the woods just in time for the Depression of the '30's ! For most purposes, I classify myself as a Brit, though I've taken aboard a kind of Mid-Atlantic persona in recent times). You can't imagine how good it is to achieve some contacts so quickly - very good for the morale. I have been reading some of your work with great pleasure. With all good wishes ! Guest guest
Dear Chris, Hey, not so far from me! You have a beautiful place to live in. I am very near the Peak District, so enjoy the moores and dales. My mother was Irish and I have Scotish geneology to. I was influenced by ACIM also, and it has become a part of my Way. Yes, Tolle has influenced me as well. My first paperback guru was Osho, but just to mention that guys name tends to court controversy. My teacher is a Sufi, but I am just a dumb dervish. I don't have a yoga background, but Zen and Toaism have influenced me. Yes, Jesus is very real to me, never had an orthodox Christian upbringing though, Western Mysticism has all the key elements of Eastern thought, and is much ignored by many seekers. The Christian-Gnostic wisdom tradition is most rewarding. This is the only satsangh I attend, yes, its a fun place to be. namaste to you and Anne love eric Dear Eric My self (Chris) and partner Anne are living in Scotland. Guest guest
Thanks for relating some of your personal journey John, I can see that you have a sense of humour about where the path sometimes seems to leads us! Oh yes, I have had bouts of depression in the past. Although I did not label them as such and never sort professional help. I would always put it down to my celtic blood, or my artistic temperament. The last one was a biggy though. So I had to face up to the fact that there were some issues that I had been failing to address in my life. I am learning to recognise and observe the symptoms before they overwhelm me now. And my spiritual outlook has (I hope), created the necessary balance in my emotional make-up to bring understanding and conscious healing to myself before I get too deep into such negative states. The above of course is an over simplification of the whole process, but I thought I would just confirm what you thought might be the case. By the way, my mother was a Roman Catholic and my biological father an Irish Jew. A rich mix I am sure you will agree! love eric Lest I forget, Eric, I must say that I was brought up in the tradition of the free Churches - though not Bible-bashing ! In retrospect, I understand so much better the essentially esthetic appeal of my 'Romish' interlude. I was enabled to travel widely, despite undertaking a somewhat colorless and necessarily short career as a High School teacher - including several years in Canada. I claim to be open-minded; but of course I realize that I may yet be shown to be shallow in proportion to that ! Never mind. A sense of humor comes to the rescue so often. This is pure guesswork - would I be correct in suggesting that you've had to endure the lows of depressive illness at one time or another ? It is something with which I am closely associated as a member of the Mind organization. John.............Silent Companion.......... ---- 22 June 2002 21:46:44 Re: New Member.
