Guest guest
Hi Maggie > Just curious! Maybe you should not have been :-) There is this joke in Dutch, it goes, "What is the past tense of 'komkommer sla' "? Answer, "Kwamkwammer sloeg" "Komkommer sla" is a kind of lettuce (sla) dish with cucumber (komkommer) The words "kom" and "sla" are also verbs, the past tense of those words are "kwam" and "sloeg"... For one reason or another such a joke drives Dutch people to hilarious insanity. To compare, consider a word play conversation like the following: Question, "What is the plural of a big hamburger?" Answer, "Burghers with big hams" Question, "What is the female gender of that?" Answer: "Fat damsels with their pants down." Question, "What is the singular opposite of that?" Answer, "A rake with his head u. . ...." This can go on for a while, becoming rather raucous, naughtier and naughtier... Heineken beer may flow freely... Wim... (Weird? Guest guest
Oh, and about that finger in the dike... that did not really happen... Wim Hi Wm: Really? I have this painting by Van Gogh that clearly (actually, it is very dark and almost impossible to discern) shows a Dutch waif sticking their finger in something, and a large pond or maybe it is just a wet floor, and a dam or maybe it is just a brick wall with chickens and a man smoking a long pipe. I thought this proved the truth of this story of the boy and the dike. Well, another sacred belief just ripped apart! Guest guest
Thank you Robert, This, " Fwd: Making fun of Advaita" goes into the folder... The Lucknow Disease and other non-dual illnesses... This is not meant to make fun of it... of course not... It reminds me too well of a certain mental dysfunction I one time displayed from such "thinking"... Actually, come to think of it , "thinking" is a mental dysfunction... Oops maybe this, what I just said, is a symptom of that "The Lucknow Disease" as well. Wim Robert O'Hearn [hrtbeat7 ]Friday, July 12, 2002 9:05 AMTo: Subject: Fwd: Making fun of Advaita a friend of Robert's wrote: THE ABIDING FORMULA - The injunction to answer all questions with "Don't go into your STORY, just abide in the SELF." Any question that can't be simply anwered with this formula is dismissed as intellectual mind stuff or mere involvement in one's personal story (MAYA). Everything is very simple, and it you don't think so, you are just caught up in the mind! THE SILENCE COMPETITION - Contest to see who can stay silent longer than the other. The person who speaks first still has a personal story they are caught up in, and are therefore no longer abiding in the Self. THE VULCAN COMPLEX - The importance of keeping your voice tone very soft and even. Never show emotion or passion. Whoever shows a trace of care or concern for anything is still attached and caught up in more personal Story. THE PAPAJI PEDESTAL - It is admitted that all beings are in reality the Self, and not their personal identity. On the level of the Self, we are all the same and all equal. The Self is not thought to have any unique qualities differing from one person to the other. The particular body and personality of the individual is considered incidental. Paradoxically, the bodymind individual of Papaji is very special and worthy of great admiration and devotion (but just don't call it devotion). As George Orwell said, "We are all equal, but some are more equal than others". RED LIGHT GREEN LIGHT - This is the contradiction of advising that we don't need to have a teacher and we don't need to come to Satsang. All we need is to stop everything and just remain in Silence and Abide in the Self. There is nothing to "get" at Satsang. At the same time one is encouraged to support the teacher and the Satsang. DISSAPPEARING PERSONALITY TRICK - Now you see it, now you don't. This is the amazing ability of the Advaitan to have their personality absorbed in the Self at any convenient moment. When this occurrs, they remain aloof and impersonal. Don't invite them to dinner when this is occurring. And definately don't ask them anything personal. "Who is hungry?". These can apply at times to both the teachers and students of the Papaji lineage of Advaita. All of this is to be taken with a grain of salt. It is just enjoyable to make fun of things. You could say that there is a dark side to everything, including the formal Enlightenment paths. Show me the person who doesn't have a shadow, and I will show you a person who doesn't stand in the sun very often. LoveAlways -- Mazie & b New! Guest guest
AnneChris send this to us a little while, I thought (ouch, a brain spasm) it was worth repeating: ------------- With tongue in cheek I offer this not my own words but having gone through the process of AA I can laugh at my self and not get too serious. THAT will get me when im "cooked" regardless of my little posturings. Love Chris It started out innocently enough. I began to think at parties now and then to loosen up. Inevitably though, one thought led to another, and soon I was more than just a social thinker. I began to think alone - "to relax," I told myself - but I knew it wasn't true. Thinking became more and more important to me, and finally I was thinking all the time. I began to think on the job. I knew that thinking and employment don't mix, but I couldn't stop myself. I began to avoid friends at lunchtime so I could read Thoreau and Kafka. I would return to the office dizzied and confused, asking, "What is it exactly we are doing here?" Things weren't going so great at home either. One evening I had turned off the TV and asked my wife about the meaning of life. She spent that night at her mother's. I soon had a reputation as a heavy thinker. One day the boss called me in. He said, "Skippy, I like you, and it hurts me to say this, but your thinking has become a real problem. If you don't stop thinking on the job, you'll have to find another job." This gave me a lot to think about. I came home early after my conversation with the boss. "Honey," I confessed, "I've been thinking...I know you've been thinking," she said, "and I want a divorce!" "But Honey, surely it's not that serious. It is serious," she said, lower lip aquiver. "You think as much as college professors, and college professors don't make any money, so if you keep on thinking we won't have any money!" "That's a faulty syllogism," I said impatiently, and she began to cry. I'd had enough. "I'm going to the library," I snarled as I stomped out the door. I headed for the library, in the mood for some Nietzsche, with NPR on the radio. I roared into the parking lot and ran up to the big glass doors... they didn't open. The library was closed. To this day, I believe that a Higher Power was looking out for me that night. As I sank to the ground clawing at the unfeeling glass, whimpering for Zarathustra, a poster caught my eye. "Friend, is heavy thinking ruining your life?" it asked. You probably recognize that line. It comes from the standard Thinker's Anonymous poster. Which is why I am what I am today: a recovering thinker. I never miss a TA meeting. At each meeting we watch a non- educational video; last week it was "Porky's." Then we share experiences about how we avoided thinking since the last meeting. I still have my job, and things are a lot better at home. Life just seemed... easier, somehow, as soon as I stopped thinking. ANON --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
