Guest guest
Superb choices, wonderful bit of sharing...profound thanks. I particularly agree with Dr. Pinsky when he asserts that a good poem really must be read aloud to be appreciated. I can also vouch for the fact that reading a mediocre or poorly written poem aloud totally rips the veneer from it and exposes it for the weak, insubstantial thing that it is. I think that good poetry is sneaky...it engages, or tantalizes, offers a layer of immediate sonaural pleasure, then comes back to rob you of part of your soul. From that moment on, that portion of your being belongs to that poem, or that poet. The echoes or images reverberate in your mind...for the rest of your life. I wrote a poem several years ago that is a terrible poem. Yet, strangely, so many of my friends have asked for copies--or to have me read it at various times aloud to them. It is a ghastly, odd, strange and disfigured thing, yet, for some bizarre reason, it burns itd way into your soul and you cannot shake the damnded thing. It's called "Silver Dish" and if anyone would like me to send a copy to them privately, I shall. I warn everyone it isnot for the squeemish, and it will leave you disturbed. It is not a "light and lovely" thing, as I often like to share...but it has a unique and grim humor. Anyhoo...hugs and all that... Did you know it was John Phillip Souza (my Great Grand Uncle) who made the modern musical arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner? Lyrics by Francis Scott Key, of course. Interesting personal family note... LOL Happy 4th of Jello to Everyone! Love, Blessings Zenbob
