Guest guest
Thanks for the explanation, Wim! Maybe your can clear something else up. I'm an American, and my father's family originally came here from the Netherlands in the 1800's. My maiden name is "Van Meter". Once, after my dad was in Holland briefly, he told me that native residents rolled their eyes at his name and said it meant "drunk" or something. I always wondered about this... Guest guest
Hi Maggie, I cannot see how your maiden name "Van Meter" can have anything to do with the inbibition of prohibited beverages in the 1800's. The name Meter could derive from an old village in the Netherlands, "Meteren". "Van" means "from" like the German "von". Meter(en) may have to do with Meden and Made (as in meadow) which means "land between rivers" . Maybe those Dutch natives rolled their eyes because your father may have imbibed a bit too much of that good Dutch beer.
