Guest guest
8/8/02 "Sweet Silence" I was sitting alone enjoying some quiet and a snack when Ananda came bounding in, full of fire and childlike craziness. She was jumping and rolling and cackling all around me. I lost my appetite. I said, "Ananda, please go and play somewhere else. I would like to be by myself a little while longer." She did not respond. I said, a bit stronger, "Ananda, I am wanting some space right now!" She heard me but still did not respond, so I said even stronger, "You know what? I am on the verge of getting angry and yelling at you and I don't want to do that, so please leave me alone!" She stopped her twirling, looked at me, and said, "But I want to be with you." I said, "Not right now you don't, because I don't want to play and I don't want to talk. Go away and I will come to you when I am ready." She considered it for a moment, said "okay," and then cheerfully skampered off. Oh my gosh, I thought. All I had to do was be honest. That was so easy. Then there was that delicious silence again (and also my delicious snack!).

Guest guest
Hi Wim, Point well taken, but that was not the point I was making. To complete the sentence: And then one she will have grown up and moved away and there will only be silence all the time. Then there will be those moments when the parent will miss that noise, those interruptions, the child once made. As a parent whose children have grown up I am qualified to make that statement in my case at least. And I agree with you about the quality of the family life in process in Kheyala, Jim and Ananda's family. But Emmy and me make up for that with Michelle's little son Liam and the neighbourhood children who come here to play, talk and eat... Ah, today they brought us a salamander... exactly what we were looking for, a salamander to live in the rock walls around our house. Children know... children do... How wonderful the Salamander! It reminds me of the time my oldest boy discovered a San Diego Lizard, a species of chameleon which is indigenous to San Diego CA, and we had a wonderful adventure catching it and returning it to a local canyon. It was quite large, about 2 1/2 feet from nose to tip of tail and not like the usual little green lizard which usually inhabit the area. Be well, John L.
