Love flourishes in that heart

in which glows the Name of Allah.

The love of Allah is like the fragrance of musk -

even a thousand wrappings cannot hold it in;

or like the sun, which cannot be hid behind one's fingers,

or like a river that cannot be stopped in its course.

My Friend is in me, in my Friend am I -

there is no distance left between us.

SULTAN BAHU

You should come close to me tonight wayfarer

For I will be celebrating you.

Your beauty still causes me madness,

Keeps the neighbors complaining

When I start shouting in the middle of the night

Because I can't bear all this joy.

I will be giving birth to suns.

I will be holding forests upside down

Gently shaking soft animals from trees and burrows

Into my lap.

What you conceive as imagination

Does not exist for me.

Whatever you can do in a dream

Or on your mind-canvas

My hands can pull--alive--from my coat pocket.

But let's not talk about my divine world,

For what I most want to know

Tonight is:

All about

You.

Poetry

"And it was at that age. . . poetry arrived

in search of me. I don't know, I don't know where

it came from, from winter or a river.

I don't know how or when,

no, they were not voices, they were not

words, not silence,

but from a street it called me,

from the branches of the night,

abruptly from the others,

among raging fires

or returning alone,

there it was, without a face,

and it touched me.

I didn't know what to say, my mouth

had no way with names,

my eyes were blind.

Something knocked in my soul,

fever or forgotten wings,

and I made my own way,

deciphering

that fire,

and I wrote the first, faint line,

faint, without substance, pure

nonsense,

pure wisdom

of someone who knows nothing;

and suddenly I saw

the heavens

unfastened

and open,

planets,

palpitating plantations,

the darkness perforated,

riddled

with arrows, fire and flowers,

the overpowering night, the universe.

And I, tiny being

drunk with the great starry

void,

likeness, image of

mystery,

felt myself a pure part

of the abyss.

I wheeled with the stars.

My heart broke loose with the wind."
