Guest guest
9/9/02 "Adjusting" Our first night with the new baby was not aglow with light and bliss. Ananda, who is accustomed to falling asleep in my arms, was quite put off at my literally having to turn my back on her. I attempted, briefly, to be a wonderful and attentive mother to both children at once but I failed and decided to be myself instead. Explaining in no uncertain terms that I was the only one in the family who happened to be carrying a supply of warm food for our hungry baby, Ananda was going to have to let me do my job in peace or she was going to have to sleep somewhere else. Believe it or not, that worked. She said okay, rolled over, and conked out. During the night, however, she would begin to sincerely cry whenever the baby stirred or made any noise. In the morning we were all awakened by Bo's kind of bark that you can't ignore. It was saying, "Whoa! Check it out, everybody! Someone's here!" Ananda ran to the door and came back saying, "It's a policeman!" Jim and I looked at each other and he got up. We were thinking we might be in trouble for making all that racket the night before, but no, it was only a uniformed deliveryman. Sent by a dear friend, he had brought balloons and a big stuffed bear especially for Ananda. The timing could not have been better to give our little girl such a lift. Jim and I cried. That long night really showed us how fragile and precious Ananda's spirit is and introduced to her dad and me a question of "Okay, so what do we do?" Then the morning came and brought with it the answer. Since then, our nights have been beautiful and intimate for all of us, with only newly-born baby sounds, the occasional whisper, and sweet, sleepy sighs rising and falling within the deep embrace of silence.
